Are you currently running Windows 10?  If so, you should be able to upgrade for free.

Evo if you have a friend, or you, that's on the net, just take a 8GB or bigger USB and go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 . Just follow the instructions to create Win 10 media... this link should download it, https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=2265055 .Then just follow the instructions, boot from the USB.  No need to buy it.

Here is a Youtube clip to help you rebuild the boot loader.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SD8E-pLMmnk

As above

Key points to remember:
  • No more free upgrades:
Microsoft has closed the loophole that allowed users to upgrade to Windows 10 for free from older versions.

  • Existing Windows 10 users:
If you already have a valid Windows 10 license, you can continue to use it and receive updates without needing to pay for another upgrade.

  • Buying a license:
If you want to upgrade to Windows 10 from an older version now, you will need to purchase a Windows 10 license.

You can create a backup to that USB and also a recovery disc image. It will still sit there as a win11 install program and have the option to repair OS.

How old is your hard drive? My old one started losing OS info and failed to boot every other week.

I ended up replacing it with an ssd card (2tb) and reinstalled 10 from the free download, I also kept the info on a USB stick which lives inside my tower so that i don't lose it lol

I went for 10 as my motherboard won't take 11 according to microsoft

note end of life

Support for Windows 10 will end in October 2025 After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Your PC will still work, but we recommend moving to Windows 11.

Download windows 11 for free here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11

Select the ISO one to download, then get a blank USB and install rufus: https://rufus.ie/en/

Select the Windows ISO and burn it onto your USB so it will create a Windows boot for you. Then Install Windows 11 and when it asks for activation code you can press skip.

You can then purchase a Windows 11 key for like a dollar on any of these key sites and they all work. https://www.allkeyshop.com/blog/buy-windows-11-pro-cd-key-compare-prices/

It will save you hundreds compared to if you were to buy it in best buy trust me.

they not telling you the right thing  for when i buy (retail) genuine MS OS on USB it's not rewriteable and can use the files as per use of the key is

You can use it as many times as you want to.

However there is an important point:

Do you have a retail license or an OEM license?

If it's a retail license you can move it from computer to computer as many times as you want to, as long as you don't have it installed on two computers at once.

But if it's an OEM license, it's permanently tied to the first computer it's installed on and it may never be moved to another. You can use it as many times as you want to *only* if you use it on the original computer.

Hey!

All this is fine. You can get a new image from windows website as described many of your answer here. that is fine.

But, if you want something better and dont have to do all this you can try this:

Activation Windows 11 CMD
Open CMD and type one by one and ENTER

slmgr /ipk VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T  (this is a l,egit and given by micrososoft license so you can use this one to get one activation many times you want)

slmgr /skms kms8.msguides.com

slmgr /ato

WWindows is now Activated!

Check Health System in PowerShell and recover damage files. (when your system has fails or errors, restore system by this) This works for W10 and W11

Power<Shell step by step:

Repair-WindowsImage -online -CheckHealth
Repair-WindowsImage -online -ScanHealth

Recover system Damage Files and Image Windows 11 Clean in CMD This works for W10 and W11

Step By Step

sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /startComponentCleanup

CHKDSK

DNS FLUSH
Flush and Clean DNS on Wondows for better response in Explores and websites games etc etc.
All this OPEN CMD and type:

ipconfig/flushdns

ipconfig /reléase
ipconfig /renew

ipconfig/release/renew/flushdns

Thats all you need to go!

I have used this method for years, and currently i have W11 running smooth as first day. (I upgraded from W10 at start doing as described here, restore your W10 image as described here, then you will have to activate your license, (in my post method) and then you can go direct to upgrade from  that W100 to W11

no problems at all. This is absolutly legal cause those license are free and given by Microsoft directly, you can do a little search if you want to get some free license too, but this one works perfectly. Other chance is actiavte the Insider W11 option with given license and do it )

If you finally get the usb install method, download a iso from here :https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11

Then put that iso in usb and install from there. Keep the USB with the iso for futures installs or repairs. As a safe version clean.

If need more info or help, you know what to do!

Greetings
