For getting rid of the crap, I use CCleaner, available free from http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

For keeping the registry healthy, checking file system integrity etc etc, I use TuneUp Utilities - free to try then purchase required:  http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/

ICAAN (Internet governing body) is planning to clean out the entire World Wide Web sometime next spring by delivering an electronic surge that will push dust and other debris through the lines and out the backs of power supplies/keyboards, etc. connected to your computers. This will not only clean the Web, but also your home systems. Users are advised to put large plastic garbage bags around their systems to collect the dust.

This should speed things up considerably.

I believe that CCleaner will do all of this for you automatically, including the option to delete the prefectch data.  It works pretty well.  I also use Glary Utilities, which you can fine on the CNet downloads.  It has a one button tune up, which cleans registry and deletes temp files, etc.  It is pretty good.
