Apocalypse Day 12.21.2012; Day After the Blizzard. Middleton, Wisconsin. This area was hit the hardest by the blizzard that meandered through here, dumping over 20" of snow over an 18 hour period. As my snowblower broke down right at the onset of the storm, I had the pleasure of shoveling all of this mess by hand. As I type this, my right hand keeps falling asleep and I can't make a fist with it due to the load that arm has been forced to carry over the past 24 hours. The temps were near, at, or above freezing the entire time the snow was falling, so it was particularly heavy. I also got to do battle with Newton's equal and opposite forces law. The pavement under the snow was slick, so as my arms thrust the shovel into the snow, my feet tried to slide backwards away from the shovel. Not the way I wanted to spend the last day before the end of the world. But hey, it's after 5pm central, the sun has set, and so far we still seem to be here. But the night is young and anything can happen, right?

Yeah, you guys got a lot of rain, didn't you? Funny how it's 20+" here and rain there with only a little over an hour drive between us!

ya i remember going on a field trip at school we all stopped at the teachers house ( can't remeber why but ) 2 of us shoveled the driveway out i was maybe 8-9 years old at the time . the next day the teacher gave us 25 cents each and we never asked for anything . it was just good to do something for someone . it was her father that told her to give us the money she told us . guess she still lived at home . dam at 8 , it was 1969 for me grade 3 . When I was a kid back on the farm in Colorado we use to have a minimum of 2 ft and usually about 3ft. The winter when it snowed 8 ft in Winslow (Arizona we were driving thru there as we did every winter) it snowed 4' plus at home. papa had to walk thru the snow into the house about 100 yrds off the road and get the tractor and snowplow and grade the road so we could get into the hose at midnight. Beings we lived on the end of the county road the county was several days getting to us so Papa plowed the roads off and the banks were about 8' to 12' high after he cleared them. It was cool driving down thru those banks as it was a new experience. Dj I want to thank you posting this as it took me back to a lot of fond childhood memories!

That's proper snowfall. Over here, the country is paralysed as soon as an inch falls. We don't do snow very well

as the really heavy stuff is quite rare and requires a certain wind direction to bring it in from Siberia and Scandinavia.

Coincidentally, there's a magazine article on the BBC News web site about the Big Freeze of 1962 that lasted four

months (I was 4-5 years old at the time and remember it well): http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-20785406

"Surprisingly", here in England, it has been raining continually for the past couple of days... I don't think we shall

have another drought in 2013! Flooding's really bad around Mikey1799's home area.

Is it true that you are obliged to clear the footpath (sidewalk) outside your property or the city fines you?

Yes, DeeJay, that's right, we are fined if the snow is not cleared in an timely manner. Within 24 hours following a snow event, I believe is how the city ordinance reads. Also, they say the "public" owns the sidewalks, but the property owner adjacent to the sidewalk is responsible for its upkeep and maintenance. So basically, the public, who owns the sidewalk in the first place, gets to sue the property owner for any calamity the befalls them while walking down your piece of the sidewalk. Stupid.

We hardly got any last year either. Warmest winter on record I think it was. Not even rain. It was just mild and dry. As for this year, you can have all I get. You pay shipping, okay?

I live in Sun Prairie, Mot. And I got stuck in Indianapolis until yesterday thanks to the blizzard. I spent 4 hours removing snow last night. Thankfully my neighbor felt pity on me and came over with his snow blower. I had a 4' drift in front of my garage door and another 4' pile at the end of the driveway thanks to the plow. I have drifts in the back yard that go over the fence.
