For servers it allows many virtual machines to be run at once, so you could amalgamate potentially 9 servers in virtual servers, and have them all on 1 physical server.

the 10 cores and 20 threads mean nothing.... what does make it a monster is the 25MB cache on that thing.... and the 128 gb max memory allowance.

I have a 5930k with 64GB RAM I use half the RAM as a ramdisk. Now I am trying to imagine what I would do with 10 cores and 128 GB RAM. I play COD4, BF4 and do video/photo editing. I think I can wait it out another 4-5 years.

Shit, the old 2 x 2.93 GHz Quad Nehalem in my MacPro 2009 now seems a little bit antiquated for some reason....

Well... I also have the 5930K, but right now, I want that processer! But, Intel does also have a Xeon, that comes with 22 core and 44 threads when hyperthreaded.. But yeah.. can it run minecraft, that is the real question.. :P:lol:

I waited as long as I could to upgrade when I had a Core2Q9550 and upgraded to the LGA 2011 i7-3820 until the mobo died and since EVGA no longer had any of that model I got a free LGA 1151 upgrade with i5-6600K while the LGA 2011 was still under warranty for 6 more months

I just don't want another upgrade until whatever comes after the i5/i7 series

It seems intel is struggling to improve on the i5/i7 series so they just keep adding more cores and more cache.

Intel is overdue for a new series of processors. The first i7 was introduced in November 2008.

Before the i5/i7 series intel averaged 2 to 4 years between completely new series of CPUs

Pentium 4 to Core2 series took 6 years. Core2 to i7 took 2 years

CPU's have pretty much hit the limit when it comes to speeds. Cores, threads, and cache are the only real improvements they can make with their current tech. That's why there is such a huge push for a new type such as Carbon or DNA processors.
