Intel is overdue for a new series of processors. The first i7 was introduced in November 2008. Before the i5/i7 series intel averaged 2 to 4 years between completely new series of CPUs Pentium 4 to Core2 series took 6 years. Core2 to i7 took 2 years CPU's have pretty much hit the limit when it comes to speeds. Cores, threads, and cache are the only real improvements they can make with their current tech.
