Hello! Over the last 2 days, I have been having fluctuating ping from my normal(around 40) to 999. It goes back and forth during game play causing the the game to freeze. It lasts 3-4 seconds, then goes back to normal. I can play normally for a few seconds and it happens again. I have restarted the computer, checked all of my wifi settings, restarted my router and mesh network and none of that has helped. The only variable I can think of is a forced Windows 10 security update installed a few days ago. Any ideas would be helpful! Thanks,

NACHO

If you have a microphone then unplug it , start the game and see if you have better ping etc. I had an issue similar to yours and it turned out to be the usb extension running my headset/mic that was,at fault

You mention WiFi so are you running wireless or hard wired ? The other thing to consider is your router location and could it be getting hot when playing...Make sure it or they are getting air and not tucked away under/behind something causing excess heat ups...If you are hard wired make sure to keep your ethernet cable away from electric cords...

Another thing you could do is run a tracecert using Dos command on the server itself, this will tell you if you are have bad or dead hops inside or outside your provider...You can do this by bringing up "command prompts" and typing in tracert 162.248.95.178....Take a screen shot of what you get and post it here...You may have to run it a few times and find the best and the worst one

Here is a picture of the run I just ran @9:25pm EST and HLSW copy of ping activity of the server image.png.e7d96c2a88319f043f74eeb09175a46f.png

I have that same bad hop @loaderXI. Something has been giving me a 12-14ms higher ping to the server and making me lag a bit for the past 2-3 weeks. Was thinking of contacting Comcast again but all those boneheads will do is restart the modem or send me another modem. This modem is only 2 months old for fucks sake.

Comcast is the Devil.

Yes outside network would mean your fucked like others...Odd thing is I search twelve99 and found they are a sub for Bell and looks like they are owned by Arelion which is a Swedish company in Sweden not North America lol...Your sitting on 19 hand shakes which is good but 11 of those are with in Comcasts network itself ffs...Some info on Reddit/Tomshardware suggest they may try to boost your speed haha

Thanks for the help. Here is the tracert below. I'm on wireless and did check all of that setup and it seems good...nothing has changed from when I was not having issues. I also tried Totty's suggestion because I did just get a new USB headset/mic and that did not solve it.

I'm thinking the "request timed out"s might not be a good thing. Let me know what you think.

Who is you internet provider?  Looks like from searching some of the ip's in the trace it might be AT&T Wireless.  Is that correct? Or do you have a cable/fiber connection?

I should also mention, the freeze that happens during gameplay usually when something when some action happens in-game like: Me getting killed, throwing a grenade, calling in a chopper, etc.

Damn dude by that tracert not only are they dropping you on your head they are slamming the door shut...Here is what I would do...Take a few of these test and grab a screen shot odf each (notate time and date of each one)...Then call your provider and explain what you are dealing with...They may suggest you do this and since you have find out if you can email them the results or speak to someone in tech support...

"IF" you could hardwire with ethernet it may or may not fix it but looks like you are not leaving their network...When I was down there in Port Deposit Md. my ping on wireless was like 18ms in my hotel

I did an IP Geo-location search the IP.

WTF ?????  Well it kinda makes more sense why everyone is laggin more than usual. Why would it go to an international carrier before going to the server?

Because they are in cahoots with NFO/Internap there for it is a host issue not a user issue

That makes sense. You get what you pay for I guess. GameServers out of Chicago is a much much much better host but they are quite a bit more expencive.

I've Never been a fan of NFOservers since they literally ruined my old competitive gaming clan mid season. 6 months of on and off DDOS attacks on our 2 dedicated server boxes mid season after being undefeated for 4 years in BF1942 DC and BF2 would royally piss anyone off.

@J3st3r  We were in Chicago until the Feds dropped sniffers on the servers there looking for terrorist training on Cod servers back when, then there was a fiber cable damaged that crossed the Great Lakes...Currently there is one server with XI that has almost daily DDoS attacks that I know of

Fucked up thing is that me and my old clan paid quite a bit extra for DDOS protection. We owned our own server boxes, so having them host VS renting 2 dedicated boxes off of Chicago Gameservers was much much cheaper.

The limitations as far as admin tools, mods ect ect that NFOservers puts on their box rentals is pretty retarded. It's like they know that they have shit bandwidth. 🤔

Its sad that even after 10+ years NFOservers is pretty much the same bottom of the barrel "Budget Friendly" server host that they were back then.

If we would switch over to Chicago Gameservers we would most likely loose all of our Aussies and quite a few people from over the pond due to the higher pings. Can't have that happen. For the past 3-4 weeks? I'm pinging between 48-53ms in our COD4 servers which was normally 29-33ms.

Here run tracert on 104.160.131.1  It's a the Valorant game server that my nephew plays on, which is hosted by Chicago Gameservers. I bet you won't get a single funky hop.

I'm thinking it is time to ditch NFOservers. There have been a crap pile of new hosts pop up in the last 4-5 years on the east coast. Just have to find an affordable 1 that fits our needs.

Looks like DDOS attack?.

About the only thing that they can without using the expensive software that would instantly block the source IPs is to block the IPs manually 1 at a time and/or offer to move the server to a different location and to offer some sort of a refund or credit.  That's exactly what the NFOservers boneheads do. They never actually "fix" the problem.

If the attacker is behind a VPN they can do absolutely nothing without blocking all Blacklisted ips (VPN IPs are actively flagged by google as blacklisted and very easy to block if you know how.)

DDOS sounds probable? I don't know, me and Cheyenne (Europe) have seen our ping doubled at some times/maps(?) last two weeks or so from around 100 to 200. Other peoples pings might have been higher at those times too, but if it was low to begin with, that's less visible. At other nights both our pings have been just normal around 100. Anyways, our ping height has always correlated like that, so it's not our own internet.

I've narrowed this down to some sort of hardware issue. I installed COD4 on another computer connected to the same network (laptop) and don't have the game freezing issues on it. I don't have to be in-game for the freezing to happen. I don't notice any performance issues with the computer outside of COD4.

Any ideas? May be time for a new machine.

That kind of stuttering, in my experience, has been HDD failing. What are your CPU temps? idle/load

Never hurts to run "SFC.exe -scannow" from an elevated terminal window to see if there are any issues with system files.

Edit: Ahh, I read your message as it stutters at all times... try other full screen games to see if it happens. If only with COD, then fresh install the game and see.
