I try to log-in to WAW and it spins a bit then quits. Any ideas what to do about this?

1. Make sure you have all the patches and have installed them in order.

2. Make sure you have a headset/mic plugged in.

Those are the 2 main things to try/check first.

Dean,

Patches can be found in the Downloads section but here are the links. Install them in this order. There's a patch in the downloads listed as 1.2-1.3 but is not needed so don't install it.  Also no need to reboot every time, just install them in order.

Patch 1.0117

Patch 1.2

Patch 1.2-1.4

Patch 1.4-1.5

Patch 1.5-1.6

Patch 1.6-1.7

So is there another work around for this? There use to be. But I played this game with a cd back in the day. I misplaced the number to open it so I bought this copy!

Is this a Steam copy?  Steam would update/patch automatically if that is the case as far as I know, I'm not familiar with how Steam manages games and installs.  Outside of that, if it's a legit CD copy, those patches should work.

Not sure really...

@BigPapaDean Can you clarify what you are using, Steam, disk or disk image??  With what you got, did you get a proper game key with it?

Ah... Steam... I do believe Steam automatically patches the game so you should be good that way.

I don't know much about how steam works with this game, don't use Steam, so hopefully someone else here can shed more light on your issue.

From the Steam Launcher, right-click on the game from the Library and select Properties from the menu. Select the Installed Files tab and click Verify integrity of game files... Steam will verify the game's files. This process may take several minutes.

The Steam version of COD5 will not work in multiplayer.  It will tell you to create an online profile and then it will just error out or some such.  I found this back when I came back to COD5 a couple of years ago.  I couldn't find my CD/key, so I purchased the game on Steam and figured all would be okay.  No.  Did not work.  Googled.  Yup, it's a known thing.  Contacted Steam for a refund on the basis that I wanted to play online and the game is, for whatever reason, unable to do that.  A refund was issued.

Thankfully I found my CD key, but not the CD itself.  @Merlin007, you may recall sending me an iso of the COD5 disk.  I installed from that iso, entered my valid CD Key, and (after installing all the updates) was back up and running.

If you do not at least have your original CD Key, I don't know how to get you around this, Dean.  I was lucky enough to have located my Key.  I have it stored in my password manager, along with many other activation keys, in a "secure note".

Thanks @djMot. Now that you mention, I do recall something about that.  Like you, I've also resorted to keeping an ISO of the game disk and copy of all my game keys, just in case.

Can I use your headset to listen to that music you have there? I guess I am gonna have to look a little deeper or find a new CD with it on it.

hey @BigPapaDean, I know I can help you fix this. Ive done it a few times with CoD on Steam.  It would be so much easier to talk you through it on voice. Ive got you on fb so shoot me a message so we can get together and get you back on the battlefield. Carl Sexton on fb

P.S
I will say this,
Step: 1 - You need someone else who is already on the version you want. Step: 2 - They need to send you their WaW game .exe from their Steam games folder.
Step: 3 - Then you save it IN PLACE OF your current WaW .exe file inside your Steam games folder.
Step: 4 - Change Steam Updates setting to ask before it updates. Turn off automatic updates. NEVER VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME FILES. It will send you back to current updated version.
Step: 5 - Start your game. It will tell you the version you are on in bottom right corner of Main Menu. Good luck, hope it works and shoot me a message on fb.

Well it would seem a lot of people play WAW from the game purchased from Steam. So it must work for them. I agree some might have issues. Logic would say its not steam its something on the users machine causing the issue bad download interupted install blah blah blah. My favorite is old and usless antivirus programs. LOL were so over that people. I have a saying about this stuff. You can spend hours going through the possibilities of what is wrong. I injoy this always interested in WTF reasons. But really were a very small crowd. My answer is this delete the game from steam. You can always download a new copy. I bet by now Dean could of did this 3 or 4 times. So delete the game from Steam reboot and reinstall from steam. At teh very least its the same waste of time trying everything else till you luck out and it works.

@Elvis9 I think it depends on when you bought it.  Early on, I believe the Steam version would allow the creation of an online profile.  Several people in the servers today are apparently playing on their Steam edition of COD5.  A couple of years ago when I tried, I could not and the issue was well known back then.  It just didn't work for multiplayer.  You could play the single-player campaign just fine, but not multiplayer online.  I think it might have been traced back to the Activision key validation servers not allowing it, or not allowing the creation of a new online profile.  If they've changed that these days, that would be great.
