Nice Gorilla.  I just got my CHL and got nice little Kahr CW9.  Same thing....single stack.  Shoots nicely.  My Glock is a little big to carry.

Kahr CW9.jpg

I am looking at 2 others for carrying when I am wearing shorts and want something smaller.....The first is the Ruger LCP .380 and the second is  the S&W Bodyguard .380.  The Bodyguard comes with the built in laser sight, so that is kinda cool and it is nice and compact.  BUT, I am thinking of the LCP with an added Crimson Trace laser trigger guard.  The LCP has gotten better reviews as a CCW.   Then I would probably load with RBCD ammo to handle whatever is comin' at me.

Thanks Killroy. Pig, thought my Springfield XD .45 was to big. So I needed a smaller weapon to have for a CCW. BTW, I like the Bodyguard with the built in laser sight.

Whilst I share your and Olive's puzzlement as to why it could be necessary to carry a firearm when going about ones business (law enforcement, military and possibly security guards excepted), I have long abandoned any expectation that people abroad will live their lives like one does in ones own country.  They've made their choice, it works for them and it isn't any of my business.  I expect you are about to be reminded of the contents of the US Constitution... Wink  Logically, if firearms are freely available to bad guys, the good guys should not be left holding a big stick or a crowbar to defend themselves and their property, perhaps?  I think I'd feel safer camping in the wild with a gun by me, with all those big bears roaming around, also.

We're fortunate in England & Wales to have suffered a relatively low rate of gun-related deaths, due to increasingly strict controls and outlawing of handguns entirely but we have seen that people who have obtained their weapons lawfully occasionally "lose it" and a tragedy results.

I found an interesting table of statistics on gun-related death: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate

The USA does not top the table and it was alarming to see an EU country above it - Estonia!

If this table is accurate, one of the safest places to live in the world is....CHILE!  Perhaps this explains why one of our Head Admins prefers a knife and a tomahawk in-game to a rifle? Laughing

For Johnny Dos and Olive. 11 reasons to have a CCW permit and allow people to have them.

  1. Criminals are less likely to attack someone that they believe might be armed. The deterrent effect of concealed carry benefits the individual carrying a handgun as well as the general public because criminals never know who is armed.

  2. According to a 2000 study by John Lott, PhD, "shall-issue" laws have reduced homicides by 8.5%, aggravated assaults by 7%, rapes by 5%, and robberies by 3%. Lott argued that if states that did not permit concealed handguns in 1992 had permitted them in 1977, 1,570 murders, 4,177 rapes, 60,000 aggravated assaults, and 12,000 robberies would have been prevented between 1977 and 1992. [8]

  3. The right to carry concealed handguns is guaranteed by the Second Amendment in the US Constitution. The Second Amendment states, "A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed."

  4. According to a 1997 study of National Crime Victimization Survey data, "robbery and assault victims who used a gun to resist were less likely to be attacked or to suffer an injury than those who used any other methods of self-protection or those who did not resist at all.” [9]

  5. Even if an adult never needs to draw a concealed handgun for self-defense, a person may feel safer being armed and feel freer to go outside at night or in dangerous areas.

  6. A majority of adults who legally carry concealed handguns are law-abiding citizens who do not misuse their firearms. According to a 2000 report by engineering statistician William Sturdevant published on the Texas Concealed Handgun Association website, the general public is 5.7 times more likely to be arrested for violent offenses (299 KB) pdf-logo.gif, and 13.5 times more likely to be arrested for non-violent offenses, than concealed carry weapon permit holders. [30]

  7. Carrying a concealed handgun could aid in ending public shooting sprees. The Apr. 20, 1999 Columbine High School massacre and Apr. 17, 2007 Virginia Tech shooting could have been ended and lives saved by an armed citizen shooting the assailants. [10]

  8. The government cannot guarantee the safety of its citizens. Protecting oneself and family is a personal duty and the government should not impede the ability of responsible adults to defend themselves.

  9. Criminals carry concealed weapons regardless of their legality. Responsible citizens should have the same advantages when it comes to protecting themselves from armed attackers.

  10. In District of Columbia v. Heller (267 KB) pdf-logo.gif, the US Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 on June 26, 2008 that although most 19th-century courts found that prohibitions on carrying concealed weapons were lawful under the Second Amendment, the Second Amendment guarantees "the individual right to possess and carry weapons in case of confrontation. This meaning is strongly confirmed by the historical background of the Second Amendment.” [31]

  11. Concealed handguns are an effective non-lethal form of self-defense a majority of the time. An Autumn 1995 peer-reviewed study by Gary Kleck, PhD, published in the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology, found that when someone draws a concealed gun in self-defense, the criminal simply retreats 55.5% of the time (903 KB) pdf-logo.gif. [32]

"Only an armed people can be truly free.
Only an unarmed people can ever be enslaved."

- Aristotle

And here it is summed up by Admiral Yamamoto during WWII.....

"You cannot invade the mainland United States.
There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass."

- Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto
(Japanese Navy)

Gorilla is absolutely correct.  Also, it is my understanding that only about 2% of the adult population in states where there are liberal carry laws ever apply for permits and of those permit holders, many are not carrying much of the time.  It is the PERCEPTION that your possible victim might be carrying a gun and ruin your plans as well as your day that often deters the bad guys.  An armed society is a polite society!  LOL!  What Europeans as well as Canadians have a hard time wrapping their head around is the notion that many of us here in the US consider it OUR duty and responsibility to protect ourselves from the bad guys. An armed intruder here thinks twice about breaking into a house when people are home because they just might get their head blown off whereas in a society where he is sure that the homeowners have been disarmed by the state they are emboldened to commit "hot" breakins and god help the poor slobs that live there that are at the mercy of the thugs.  I have multiple loaded firearms in my home.  I probably will never have to so much as point one of them at a human being but if the situation arises I will protect myself and my family/property with lethal force.  The police certainly can't and won't protect you.  They investigate crimes after they happen.

I've carried a weapon most of my adult life --never really thought about it  as coming from a military family we were raised around weapons and their proper use  and I taught my children (1 daughter , 2 sons ) the same way I was taught .

I've found through life experience, its always better to have a weapon and never have to  use it then to need one and not have it available.

My wife carries a .38 I carry a .45 , I have met few people in oklahoma that do not carry and firmly believe that though I live in an area of ranches and large acreage , there is very little crime here --criminals know they will meet armed resistance and seek easier prey.

As a consultant to Law enforcement  and part of the cleet training centers team of instructors here I often share my own personal experiences with members of the class ---both on the civilian side and the military side , I have never had any class that did not wonder how with me growing up in Los Angeles , CA. from 1 to age 17 (then the marine corps took me away to exotic locations :P ) I had few problems with anyone even though my home was in the middle of Gang territory yet when we went back to visit friends a few years after I left ---my wife was at a stoplight and a youth attempted to car jack her --when he opened the passenger door to get into the vehicle he was met with her .38 in his face and he chose to back out of the vehicle and run away rather then risk his life , all of us can only imagine what may have happened had my wife not been properly trained and ready to respond defensively in such a situation.

One of the most fundamental rights an American has that many in this world do not is the right to bare arms , giving them the ability to protect themselves and their loved ones should they ever have too .

One should never feel threatened by a decent law abiding citizen that is armed --to the contrary it should make those around them feel comfortable in the knowledge that they have the capacity to protect themselves should it ever be necessary .

To those that do not own guns or for whatever reason are against them I always challenge that I will put up any money you think you can cover that when the shit hits the fan you will later be thankful there was somebody there that was able to at least make a legitimate attempt to protect you and  your loved ones from an armed adversary .

My students often ask have I ever had to take a human life with my firearm and its an important part of there lessons to realize the answer .

Yes both in civilian life in defense of my families lives and more enemies than I care to remember in my many tours of duty , they need to understand its the human being behind the weapon that did the deed not the weapon itself as a gun is just an  inert object in order for it to function properly it must have a human being manipulating it --the lesson always ends with me telling them I hope they are NEVER in a position where they are forced to use lethal force and after I relate how I have trouble sleeping often and have vividly detailed dreams of each and every killshot ---it helps to bring home the responsibility that comes with the choice to arm oneself.

Guns are not for everyone , however I am glad myself and my family was raised to support the second amendment.

I would have to agree with Gorilla in that guns are an effective means in reducing violent crime ---think about what might have happened had faculty members been armed when a violent shooter comes in and attempts to randomly take innocent lives ? most likely they would not have gotten far before a citizen could have stopped them , saving many lives.
