Howdy all,

Just to let you guys know, due to the floods in Thailand, the pricing on Hard dries will go up. Western digital has been particularly touched and shut down their manufacture in Thailand, but Seagate also has manufacturing facilities over there...

So if you're planning to build a system, or just to grab a newer, faster HDD, shop around! The PC manufacturers are scrambling to try to secure as any had drive as they can....

Yep, just about everyone, Hitachi too:

"Nimec was hit hard by the recent floods in Thailand, and now major drive manufacturers like Hitachi, Seagate, and Toshiba are preparing for the worst."

Maybe it's time for potential buyers to consider trying an SSD!

Crucial M4 and Intel 510 based on MARVELL controller are great and reliable..you know...(the Sandforce offerings on the other hand are still a little flaky in terms of reliability, so I don't recommend them)

The HDD situation keeps getting worst...

FROM TECHREPORT:

PC makers turning to gray market for hard drives
by Cyril Kowaliski — 9:34 AM on November 4, 2011

It's no secret that the flooding in Thailand has had a disastrous effect on hard-drive supply, causing shortages and hiking prices. Now, DigiTimes says PC makers have gotten so desperate to stock up that they've turned to the gray market, using unofficial channels to get their hands on remaining drives:

The sources described the brand vendors going into a "panic" to fill their HDD inventory. Most have repeatedly placed orders to HDD makers with combined volume already double or even triple their usual demand, but since HDD makers can only reply that they have no more inventory, or cannot provide their supply status, the vendors have turned to the gray market.

That reported rush has been so extensive that, according to the supply-chain sources quoted by DigiTimes, gray-market prices for 320GB and 500GB drives have roughly doubled. The site quotes figures of around $60-70 for 320GB models and $100 for 500GB drives.

Yesterday, DigiTimes reported Western Digital and Samsung wouldn't be supplying hard drives to the Taiwanese channel this month. The shortages have affected everyone, though, and things must be tough for PC makers around the globe.

I did some re-arranging in my puters and put a couple of 160g back in as OS drives to free up a 500 and 640 for storage. This should hold me through for awhile.

Hopefully, that will take care of the price gouging situation....HDD prices are at around 160% of what they were before the flood...

Hopefully, that takes care of the price gouging - What's to bet it doesn't. You know how this goes, the price goes up because of shortage of supply then never comes down, or doesn't come down any where near enough when they see how much money they can make of us poor saps!!!
