I detest anything and everything connected with Halloween.

It is the most unwelcome American import into this country,

even considering the muck McDonalds serves up.

Fortunately, local children refrained from knocking on my

door last year and I trust they will exercise such sound

judgment this year.

I fail to understand why people consider it attractive,

wholesome or beneficial...

Candy you Idiot!

Us kids love the candy. No different than candy on Easter, candy on Valentines presents on Christmas and presents on your birthday. It's what we can get out of it and as much as we can.

Damn I agree with you D.J.......  their is definitely something wrong here. But I blame all of the UK, German, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, France and other European countries as that is were we came from. :)

Its origins are in the Roman Catholic Church but Henry VIII and subsequent Puritans didn't observe All Hallows Eve or All Saints Day (1 November).

Thirty to forty years ago, in this country, it was barely spoken of.  As a child I never dressed up and disturbed old people to demand sweets (candy)

- none of us did.  The religious roots are now forgotten and what is left is a secular ghoul-fest without any meaning that coincides with Samhain, a pagan

festival.  It makes a lot of money for some people and that is, I think, why it is promoted by the big supermarkets etc.  It encourages anti-social

behaviour - our police have to mount extra patrols and issue advice to residents in advance of it!

We never dressed up when we were kids but we did hollow out a Turnip...(yes a Turnip we never heard of or seen a Pumpkin), and make a face on it, then we would stand a candle in the middle of it, then we would either hang around outside pubs or go knocking on peoples doors and say "Penny for Halloween" yes we could beg with the best of them, but never heard of trick or treat and stuff like that until i was older, if we said trick or treat when we were kids and some buffoon showed us a trick instead of giving us some cash, we would have probably lynched them. Then of course a week later it was penny for the Guy, now that is exclusive to us Brits, we loved that week it was the only time some of us scruffy kids seen money.

Most of our holidays are Pagan and all of them are out to make money. Christmas, New Years, 4th..., Thanksgiving are all out to make money. If we weren't always in the needs to entertain ourselves we probably would not latch on to such rubbish but we "rich" humans seem to have more time on our hands to waist time and money.

Rich compared to other parts of the world I mean.

@ Sonovabich  Guy Fawkes Night is an established English tradition involving explosives so count me in favour!

As a devout Royalist, I have no time for the treasonous and telling the story of what happened to Fawkes the

terrorist contributes to children's education.
