Still, everyone should upgrade NOW. Anti-malware is fine - every third-party antivirus/anti-malware app will still work, but the critical thing is that security patches will no longer be developed and released. The vulnerability holes will get bigger and bigger over time. If anyone thinks XP is a hackers target now, just wait until the patches and fixes stop coming. The OS is 13 years old. Time to dig a deep hole, thank it for its service, and give it a dignified burial.

XP was an exceptional OS but windows 7 will take its place and will be the new superpower to business & personal Operating systems. my work just did a major rollout of windows 7 for this very reason of lost support.

XP worked too well and allowed many software programs too much flexibility, like Nero for downloading and burning existing CD's and DVD's...

If anyone here uses the windows 7 version of Nero, you have noticed how you can't copy much of anything. Even old CD's won't copy on the Win 7 version, much less downloaded data to burn your own collectors items like old music boots....

It's all about the $.

I still have 2 pcs running XP which will have to retire soon.  Has been a great OS until 7 came out.  But, as tech goes, must move on.

The popularity of the OS and the sheer numbers of people who have opted not to upgrade to Vista or 7

says a great deal about how people regard the direction Microsoft has dragged us all in.  Outlook

Express was the most user-friendly mail client compared with what was foisted on us afterwards.

I have no hesitation in pointing people towards Thunderbird these days.

Whilst I recognise the dangers of retaining an unsupported operating system, I do not welcome its

retirement.  Windows 8 has flopped and I see this as a cynical way to strong-arm people into spending

yet more cash on an OS upgrade.

Personally, I have no intention whatsoever of paying a further £75 for an upgrade to 7 for my netbook.

Instead, I shall stick two fingers up at Microsoft with a royal "screw you!" and buy a non-Microsoft tablet.

Discontinuing an associated mobile broadband contract will save me around £120 pa that will offset the new

hardware cost.

If I feel adventurous, I can always stick Linux on the netbook...

Mac is a solid computer if you’re going to use it for development (Video creation, Photoshop, captivate) but when it comes to gaming I believe it lacks the output. Stick with a PC and if you want the Macintosh experience I would duel boot on another partition of your drive "hackentosh". macs are sturdy development machines but so far away from being gaming machines.

What is really sad is that XP is this old and has been patched thousands of times and people still find security holes in it.  Not to mention the back doors added in so that our government can spy on us.

People only think mac is better for photo+video because macs got a great start in the 'hipster-art-student' market. Lots of art schools have macs in etc... But all those products ( the adobe master suite mostly) are equally available on PC.

Welp, I must admit to burning around 100 DVD's worth of music Data and 1000 CD's....

And when windows7 replaced my windows xp, they were no longer compatable. And once upgraded, Nero would not copy much of my Collectors Boots anymore.....

I used xp for a long time and never had a crash. But when wind7 came out and I tried to use it and encountered several crashes but with no major issues. However, I still like wind7 better. Unfortunately, rest in peace xp.

Only switched from XP because of directX 10 and jumped straight to w7 and I am not disappointed. W7 is great, but I will not get a windows when this one is finished gaming devs want to move on to focus on Linux because its more open for them so I will follow them.

RIP XP. It was by far the best OS they made. Simple to use and without all of the bullshit bells and whistles that their OS's have had since then that few use and nobody wanted.

Microsoft is doing the same thing to people as Apple by forcing upgrades every few years, just on a much much larger scale. Personally I'd rater be taken advantage of by MS than Apple.

OSX upgrades are significantly cheaper. Albeit there are more of them. Now their OS is "sorta" free. I'm still using 10.6x on my Mac so Im not forced into anything and I wont upgrade in this case. But I dont buy a lot of new software either.
