Quite an interesting video I came across that I thought I would share. There is actually mad comparisons at the end comparing radiation you receive during CT scans and so on

Scientific American doesn't appear to agree with the video that smokers get more radiation than astronauts or people receiving medical tests like CT scans.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/graphic-science-radiation-exposure/

Of course some of the claims made by the anti-smoking lobby are simply lies, so it wouldn't surprise me if they paid for the production of the video. I'm not denying that smoking is horrible for people, but the extent at which the anti-smokers go to to further their cause is just fraud. South Park even did an episode on it.

Its suprising what little we knew about ionizing radiation years ago. Years ago you would go to the shoe store and you could Fluoroscopy your feet to see if the shoes you chose fit properly... Morons..

Doesn't seem to be a very cost effective way of doing things but it works.

I work at a very radioactive site in the southeastern US. I routinely work in areas much more radioactive than Chernobyl (but much smaller areas). That's why I'm so crazy. What I saw on his meter in the basement at Prypyat was equivalent to about 150 mrem/hr, which is high, but I work around similar often (and much higher). You wouldn't want to hang out there, but you obviously can for small amounts of time and not suffer any ill effects. I'm sure when the accident happened, it was way worse.. not to mention the airborne contamination that you would breath into your lungs.

I think we know a few of the most radioactive places on earth, but there are several others that never made the news. I spent several years in South America and I remember  in the mid 80's-early 90's, several "ghost ships" (mostly Eastern European), dropping their anchors 25-50 miles off the coast of poor countries at the time such as Ecuador or Peru. They would send a small boat with a few crew members and a bag of cash, to bribe the major and authorities of small villages (and islands) in order to dump "waste".  The authorities would take the bribes 99% of the time and then the big ship would "unload" its waste all over the coast (beaches, hills, etc).

These areas would eventually become ghost towns due to acute radiation syndrome, Cancer, mortality rates, infertility etc. Sad but true.
