Anyone in the UK doing this regularly is struggling without a lift like the Big Blue, a must for any serious work. Incidentally I made my own cables for years and there's a secret I can tell anyone interested, make a soldering pot out of an old large nut and bolt, and dip the prepared cable and nipple in it as opposed to trying to solder with a gun, perfection every time.
