Steam Version of COD5 Won't Let Me Create an Online Profile

So I just got a new PC.  Can't find my old COD5 CD, but I do have the CD Key, but that seemed rather useless without a disc.  So I just pulled the trigger on Steam to repurchase the game for $15.

It refuses to allow me to create any online profile.  wtf?

Anyone have any suggestions?  I just seem to be chasing a ghosts with this one.  No working solution has been found in hours of searching.

I've experienced the exact same problem last year and ended up buying a USB DVD to reinstall it directly from my CD's... so I'm of no help to you and I'm sorry it, but I'll take any help too !

Is there no way of getting your old profile off old computer and inserting it in new version? It's on the forum somewhere (a few times) first tell windows to show hidden files then copy it, and keep a copy regularly as it updates. I've got the path to go upstairs but the wifes asleep, if I copy it correctly from our forum

what about a shop that sells secondhand games, buy just for the disc, should be very cheap

Did you allow CoDWaWMP.exe through your firewall? Are you using the original cd key from which your profile was created? (Insert key in game menu in single player).Try running the .exe as admin from your Steam /common folder.

Sadly this has happen to many of us...The version from steam is "single player only" so before the clock ticks away get a refund and buy some where a hard copy and install your self

First time poster to WAW, just installed WAW from Steam, setup a new online profile, took a few tries because it said others were already in use, but it works for me!  Of course I'm using a steamdeck and SteamOS but it's the same software as a base.

does the server list show up ? If not that would mean the games not updated. You may also try running steam go to library your game right click select properties . There you have 2 choices one is updates the other is check interigty of the game. As ussual you can delete it and reload it. Good luck . Nice to see you back.

Yeah, I know all about transferring profiles.  In fact, I installed the game from Steam, then before even starting it and before the game had even created the Activision folder in AppData, I copied that entire folder structure over from the old machine.  Other than noticing that the hardware had changed (and just say no to the reset it suggests on launch), I expected it to come up fully intact and right where I left off.  Instead the game came up in 720 resolution and wanted me to create an online profile.  At first, I thought maybe the Steam version did things differently, so I renamed the Activision folder I copied over and restarted the game to let it create its own.  It did, so I know it's still the same old game, but absolutely nothing I've tried has worked to allow me to create even a scratch profile name.  I even found the place to enter a CD Key, which I still have, and it accepted it as valid, but just refuses to let me create ANY profile.

I did find the place to enter a CD Key in the multiplayer settings.  It accepted my key as valid, but still no luck creating any profile.  Good point on the firewall, but I can see the XI servers (and everyone else's) on the server list, so I think it's getting through okay.  I think I did try to run the exe as admin at one point thinking it might need elevated privileges to get everything established.

Yes, the server list shows up.  All XI servers are listed.  Someone told me recently in-game when I asked if anyone was on the Steam edition and if they had any problems, I was told, no problems, it installed and worked fine and was already patched.  Not sure if that's really true or not, and I have not installed any patches myself.  One person said to only install patches up to 7 and not do 8 otherwise the XI servers would not work.  Odd since the other person said it was pre-patched (presumably including 8 ) and worked on our servers.  I have run an integrity check and it says, "All 333 files successfully validated".

Outside chance but I did read this somewhere, I don't think the Steam version has Punkbuster (I know you don't need it) check. If it isn't there try downloading add WAW to punkbuster and tick box in game, I'm sure this cured a similar problem for someone, but this is clutching at straws.

The original WAW was built to work with Punkbuster and may not work if it's not present, but I'm no expert

The original WAW was built to work with Punkbuster and may not work if it's not present, but I'm no expert

It does have it, and it did install it.

Have you tried replacing your CODWAWMP.EXE with the one posted on this site? I had all kinds of issues before swapping it.

My bad , it was cod4 IW3mp.exe that I had issues with.

Go to your Profile folder and make sure there were no $$$ accounts created. Open your "active" folder in your profile folder and make sure it displays your correct name and not $$$.

The beauty of steam is you buy a game  run it Steam does everything for you. So you should not have to install a thing. 

  So my favorite saying here is it only takes an hour to delete steam and WAW and reinstall.  It can take days to try out all the fixes. Delete WAW from within Steam then delete Steam.

I don't know if this has been tried , But from what I understand you transferred you profiles over before you created an online profile , and that will not work , In the past what I had to do was install the game and patches that are needed, then create an online profile pick a game any game online and join it and play a for a second, now you will be able to transfer you profiles , over and play , done ,   That allows your game to create the files needed ,

I'm not sure if this is 100 percent true but I've heard they ran out of online slots for new profiles. Sounds stupid if you ask me. But djmot I do have the dvd version if if you have your code I could rip it to and iso file and compress it with WinRAR ad setup a way for you to download It if you would like to try this give me a msg and I'll start working it out asap

Tried this 51 ways from Sunday (so many times I could not get a refund )...Kind of made sense but did not work

One other that I think was posted I this site. As well I've read it in the steam forums is play single player first.

I'm not sure that playing single player will effect the creation of an online profile. And I don't believe they support this game anymore as I have looked on the call of duty website before for help
