Our van is a Honda odeessy 2006 or 2008. The auto repair shop has had our van for like a yr now and hasn't done any work on it. We even sent in a part for 1 of the 2 things it needs and still have not done any work. It is also not wanting to start. You crank it and not a single sound and some stuff like certain windows won't open and etc. I would like to get our van fixed asap so we can stop pissing our money away to renting a car. It is getting so hard and depressing not being able to get stuff we want and need. We need this van bad cause we are a family of 6. And we need it to buy bulk stuff. Stores here won't deliver to us.

So if someone near by humbolt, tn or Jackson, tn or a little further out can help spend time fixing the van with their skills or knowledge on our problems with it that would be awesome.

Firstly, get the van back, they are taking the piss

Secondly, why oh why have you waited this long?

Third, sue them

That ya would need to ask my hubby and we would have to scrape up some money to tow the van back home. Family stuff keeps happening which keeps taking priority on everything else, bills to keep the utilities and rental. Thank goodness no mortgage payments.

Without knowing exactly what is wrong or more details it's going to be hard to help diagnose.. What did it go in for originally?

they said they could fix it but they only attached a certain thing that checks and that was it, we told them ok well if you cant fix that then at least fix the shock spring thing and my father in law sent them the package part to have them fix it... i have been nagging at my husband about the van status and all he says "i gotta get it towed to another shop." I am thinking just get it towed to home and we will have someone come and fix it in the driveway. This way we know work is getting done on it for sure and no one doing shady stuff to our van.

This could be so many things the way you describe just stopping then 'no clicks' you would really need to test things, if possible with a scanner, it could be ECU (not impossible but unlikely), fuses, relays  etc etc. But the main culprit you should test first is the battery, because petrol engines (most are in USA) do not run or function without electric, now before you start screaming hold on a minute. Even replacing the alternator will not charge a bad battery, that should be the first check, we have many techs on these forums who I'm sure would agree. If the shop you've put it in haven't done anything in a year then you are being ripped off, pure and simple, get it back now.

In the UK we have mobile repair people who come to your door, don't you have this?  How old was your battery?, if over 5 years then it is a prime suspect, I did a bit on batteries a month or so ago, and don't want to ramble on again.

If it isn't the battery and still electrical it gets a bit more complicated but isn't rocket science, but you do need test equipment and knowledge.

To any of you out there, if your garage can't diagnose and fix in a month get it asap to another one who can, so many people are scammed because they don't know a bit of basic things about cars.

The first thing with no clicks is the starting circuit, you may have a parasitic drain flattening the battery, bad earths and a whole host of things, someone with skills needs to look at it.

Get it back, if it is worth it and get someone you trust to look at it

With a Jump box or jumper cables to another car or Battery do any lights come on? If so then It could be the Starter or Starter Relay that went bad. If not then it is a fuse or something from the battery to the Fuse box that has gone bad.

The battery was brand new, he also checked all fuses and they are all good too. We dont have that kind of stuff here where auto shop comes to your door and fix it, would be nice for sure. He spent hours working on that alternator and replaced any fuses, bolts and all that, made sure wires were properly secured and all that.

OK but even new doesn't mean it is a good battery (or fully charged) you always begin any diagnosis with the basics and never assume anything, I had a bad brand new battery only six months ago, if roughly handled in shipping you can get a cell failure, you can't see it without a meter and some testing.

Every petrol combustion engine needs 3 things to work :-

Fuel/oxygen

Ignition

Compression

Every mechanic on a non running engine should check the components of these basics, sorry but can't do that without it in front of you.

But again, and I can't repeat this often enough check the basics, oil (don't run if none there), water (cooling), fuel (don't believe your gauge they and sender units fail) and visually inspect to see if any pipes off etc. Doing this can save you a fortune and garage bills etc.

Did he check the alternator was working with a meter, and that fuel was getting to the engine?

I could go on and on for hours, but you definitely need to take this back from this so called garage.

Well, the way it shut off you can rule out anything with the starter for now.  The new alternator was for certain putting out a charge of around 14v?

I'm thinking since this was an issue it could still be an issue that was not corrected.  With a new battery it would run and drive for a while but once the battery drained.  it would die and not restart.

To start, verify the battery has a full charge.  does it start or turn over or do anything?

yes?  test the alternator again

Still nothing?  Is there a check engine light on?  do you have access to a scan tool? You can buy them cheap, google the codes, they are likely related to the problem.

After digging around online. I found a common problem with these is the ignition relay.  There is a small soldier that is known to break. It is located right behind the ignition key.

It could be Transmission Range Switch, Which won't let the car do anything like crank or make any sound cause it thinks it is in gear.

I also found this : This would look like a flat braided cable going from the engine to the chassis of the car

Engine to Chassis Ground

The engine needs a strong ground to the chassis in order for your Odyssey’s various electrical systems to work.  If that cable is corroded, there could be problems such as misfiring, slow/no starts, or even the engine dying while driving.  This is a common cause of many “gremlins”.

my hubby did check everything he could think of which is why he had that Trenton Auto Shop to check it out. He has another shop in the work to get it hauled to there since they are more "smarter and dedicated" but not cheap to fix the problem. But he is hoping that the Trenton Auto Shop will fix the spring shock BEFORE having it transferred to the other shop. I have told him if money is an issue we should have someone we know who can fix cars and wouldn't mind working on our van to get the stuff working. no one i know locally in family n friends wise to help out yet they always drop everything to help my other family members in need of help. You guys only know what I have been told and what I can remember that happened. My memory is a little shady from those days cause I was having a lot of heart problems and allergic reaction to heart meds during those months

Turned key no clicking, dashboard lights off, no power for windows, he lifted some small thing near the gear shift and stuck something in there to see if anything different, i don't know what the results were suppose to be(sorry), He replaced the battery several times cause one battery had bad cells, other one was dead and he got a new one again a few days later. the new alt. got us going and he spent hours to make sure it was good to go, bolts, cords and all in proper places just so we could go to a family thanksgiving dinner. he did check that T like shape thing like in that one video and that was replaced, he has pulled every single fuses and replaced every single one of em. Shop told him its either wires or computer but they don't know how to fix it. let alone they haven't even replaced the spring shock on the car that we have sent them the part for. we were promised that they would have it fixed over the weekend, never happened.

I feel like we are right back where we were when our toyota broke down really bad where we mad rushed for a rental so we could go to the nashville fest. ever since we have moved to TN we have had nothing but bad luck with cars here in TN. Water in gas station gas and they refused to help pay for the shop repairs so it ended been reclaimed by the dealer ship. the other car, timing belt, spark plugs got stuck in and hood went flying off on it, cant remember what triggered that chain of event but it all happened real fast. another car was in the process of going to be worked on but other stuff came up and it got repo'd. and now we are back to 1 car which is our van.
