If you have a decent quality SLR camera with a tripod you can still take some pretty amazing shots of the stars with long exposures regardless of the amount of city light pollution. The camera can capture stars that you can't see with your eyes and the results are usually amazing. The shots I took of the comet and stars at the beginning of this thread are an example of what you can do simply by steadying a camera on something solid. The trees look orange because of the street lights in front of my house. With a tripod you can take much longer exposures and the stars really get brighter and jump out at you.

That's a common yellow-jacket, a type of wasp. They built a nest up in between the concrete slab that's the base of our front shade porch and the house. They had to briefly hover before they climbed up and in. I laid down on their flight path - with several of them pinging against my head - and zoomed in and took a number of shots. I focused on the wall and pulled back focus in the hopes of getting a good shot or two. Making it more adventurous is that I'm allergic to wasp stings!

Your focus technique seemed to work out well for you.  Will have to keep that in mind for such closeups.

I would never want a picture of a yellowjacket that badly. Why don't you do something more safe like standing in front of an oncoming train?

I've been interested in macro-photography for a while being a lover of wildlife.

Here are a few pictures I have managed with a pretty basic digital camera (Lumix).

Cinnabar moth in the grass.  Judging by the chewed-up condition of its wings, it had survived a bat attack!

My daughter and I are photo bugs. I've got a D3100 and a D7000 that we use. We went to the park 2 weeks ago and these are some of the pics that we took.
