Interesting, in that it only penetrated the outer pane; must've been at the end of its trajectory.  Wonder if it was a ricochet.  My 65" tv sits in front of this window; so after ascertaining that it only penetrated the outer pane, I immediately checked to see if it damaged my tv.  Derp.

The back end of the bullet that the building manager showed me seems to be from a hunting rifle caliber round.  I'm thinking someone in the woods a mile or so away was being very stupid.  You can actually see the hole it left in the screen, along with a smudge on the 2nd pane.  People doing repair & maintenance work from a cherry picker actually noticed it.

Good news, glad to hear you don't live in one of those big cities with all the crimes and murders occur day after day or year after year ran by the one party for the last 50 years or so, not all but most.

Thanks.  I live several stories up; magnetic locks on building doors with cameras all throughout & on the perimeter... even a few police live in the building.  Nice area, nice people.  Wouldn't live in a crime-ridden area.

Murricaaaaaa. I even had 2 'bullitholes' in my living room window once. Woke up at night, thinking I heard some loud noises. Fell back asleep and when I had breakfast before work I saw two holes in my living room window. Obviously, here in Holland the guns aint swinging around but it were some folks shooting bb guns or shit, it appeared. Almost took my whole window out

Looking at the photos, from my professional experience, it seems whatever hit the window was from a distance.

Did you see any lead or brass fragments between the glass panes, or on the ground below the window? I also saw numerous holes punched in the outer screen. The glass breakage appears to be definitely inward (force from the exterior). If the holes in the screen mesh protrude inward, it indicates inbound projectile (bullet fragments, shotgun pellets, etc.) which would indicate distance and number of projectiles hitting the screen/window. Obviously, a large portion of the projectile penetrated the screen and hit the glass. Low velocity, or else it would have went completely through the whole window and most likely in to your TV.

Check out the area at the bottom of the sill between the panes of glass AND on the ground below the window. Look for lead and brass. If you don't have a metal detector, eyeball it as best as possible. They are usually easy to spot.

At a minimum, file a report with local/state law enforcement. Sometimes things like this lead to bigger issues happening outside of your window.

Guys doing maintenance on the exterior of the building from a cherry picker noticed the bullet fragment - which was the back-half of the bullet - laying between the two panes.  When the building manager showed it to me, I saw immediately it was a hunting caliber size.  It had material like that of the exterior of our building embedded in the front end of its remnants, leading me to believe it might have struck the building before hitting the window.  Nobody would've been targeting me specifically, as there's no way to know whose apartment is where from the nondescript exterior.  Lining up the largest hole in the screen with the hole in the window produces an oblique angle that also included the smudge or whatever on the inner, intact pane.  This had to have happened in the past couple days & had me thinking to a loudish sound I heard hitting the window a couple evenings ago, which I attributed to a bird strike; although I can't be sure that was when it happened.  It's an interesting mystery of sorts.  The building manager messaged the photographs to the police that live in our building for their opinion, & in all probability will file a report to facilitate insurance coverage, among other things.

Ok ... at last they paid attention and let you know (and observed the physical evidence). Sounds like good property management at a minimum.

Yeah, definitely report it. Glad you and your "interior property" are ok.

There are a lot of idiots out there with guns.

Yeah, I had to laugh, because even just after I noticed the inner pane was intact,  I still looked to see if my TV was ok.  Duh.
