Blind people get gun permits in U.S. state

 

From page B1 DES MOINES, IOWA — Some blind people
are granted gun permits in one U.S. state, and law enforcement officials are
debating the wisdom of it.

The Des Moines Register reports that Iowa law doesn’t allow sheriffs to deny
a permit to carry a gun in public based on physical ability. Blind people can
obtain the permits for carrying a weapon in public because of changes to state
law that took effect in 2011.

Jane Hudson with Disability Rights Iowa said keeping legally blind people
from obtaining weapon permits would violate the Americans with Disabilities Act.
She said federal law requires states to analyze a situation individually before
denying a service. “The fact that you can’t drive a car doesn’t mean you can’t
go to a shooting range and see a target,” Hudson said.

Some other states require anyone applying for a gun permit to provide proof
of their visual ability by supplying a driver’s license or doctor’s statement.

In Iowa, Polk County officials said they have issued weapons
permits to people who can’t drive legally because of vision problems at least
three times.

I am positive that if it were as big of a concern as it sounds and if anything happened the media would swarm and this would be as big a story as there is. I just don't think it's all that big of an ordeal! This brings me to another question: Why do we always think we can legislate and solve our problems? The enforcement branch has all they can handle now without adding completely useless and unenforceable laws to the workload? Just a thought!

and legally blind doesnt mean you cant see anything.  I am considered legally blind without my corrective lenses.  i can see but i cant see in detail.  this is just the media trying to cause a stir.  you come across more people everyday that are considered legally blind then you can  imagine

A lot of our US friends think that all of Canada is North of them,but this little part where I live is South of some of them,that's all.Right even with northern California.

And, there are other reasons to get a permit than carrying a weapon on you. You can have them in your car without restriction. If you don't have a permit in my state you are restricted on where you can be with your gun. In other words you can transport them without fear of getting them taken by the cops. You can use it as your voter ID, it is a state issued ID. It is fun at the airport to give the TSA your carry permit as your ID. BWWWWAHAHAHAHAAA.

There is a broad interpretation as to who is "legally blind". In some cases it should not deny them a permit. In other words you do not have to be blind to be declared "legally blind".

 

There should be some way to address each permit on a case by case basis.

 

I can guarantee there are a lot of people out there, especially amongst our senior citizens, who damn well should not have a drivers license either or a gun permit.

That's not true Steve...I'm a retired Government employee and I pay a premium every month...Benifits depend on what tier of the Gov you work for, the higher up the better the benifits...The lower echilon employees (the ones that accually work) get benifits comparable to what civillian union workers in the same line of work receive... :)

I to am considered legally blind in one eye, I have been from birth...That didn't prevent me from serving in Viet Nam so I 'll be damned if it should prevent me from protecting myself... :)
