At university I studied vocal music education but had a change of heart and got my degree in Counseling. Unfortunately, that doesn't help me much in the job market. Most of the jobs I've had have been in accounting/office management, which I love. I admit to being a paperwork nerd. When I moved back to New Orleans the only work I could find was Walmart, then I was injured on the job and terminated. Sued, got a little money which is finally running out, so I'm looking for a job. I would love a work at home job like I had in Nashville. The company kept overhead down by having everyone telecommute. I was assistant to the CFO and HR Manager.

I had a job lined up to do taxes, but the IRS can't seem to "verify my identity" and wants me to go to their office. I'm kinda scared to go, I mean It's the IRS!

so, now I'm looking. If anyone knows of any decent jobs, I'm happy to move away from New Orleans again. The job market here is awful.

Nice. I'm about to gradate with a degree in computer engineering and i'm looking to do something like that. It's hard finding the job type i'm looking for because everbody thinks my degree is computer science and wants me to write web apps in java... Blaaa

I would love to do anything hardware, firmware, asic design. I love writing in assembly too but I can't find a job were somebody will pay me to do it.

I know exactly what you mean. I have my Undergrad in Computer Engineering and Masters in Electrical Engineering so I had to face similar problems until I built up my experience.

I can get some internal referrals for you in some companies. Some companies I know are hiring internees for summer.

Also whats your interest: ASIC RTL design, ASIC Backend design, Firmware (C++) or Firmware (Assembly). Send me your resume when you are ready and I can get some internal referrals with various companies :)

I just had an interview, at a gas station no less, and prior to filling out an application asked if I have ever sued a former employer. I was hesitant, but he persisted so I said yes, for medical. He then said the job was taken.

Yep, those kinds of things tend to stay with a person and can make a job even more difficult to get.  Was it actually a law suit or arbitration?

Actually yes she does if she wants the job. If she filed a lawsuit against her previous employer it's in the public record and not subject to privacy laws.

Thanks Harry. I don't come across too many dinosaur bones, but I have a shitload of Native American artifacts. I've been a collector my entire life, and little did I know my knowledge of what I considered a hobby would be paying the bills one day.

I was an insurance broker for 30 years, then sold my portion of the business to my brother and his sons 4 years ago. Since then I fell into another career as a curator for a natural history museum that is being built in Silicon Valley.  I wish I would have gotten into this gig before insurance. It's a lot more fun.

Wait, this means LOM is our resident Ned Ryerson - watch out for that first step - it's a doozy!!!

LOL, I was waiting for somebody to chime in with that. Actually I was a third party administrator, so I never sold directly to the public. Guys like Ned Reyerson would sell through my company and I'd get a portion of the commission.  Trust me, there are a lot of Ned's out there.

I work in the lab of a plastic recycling factory mixing and testing plastics

You've probably tested some of the plastics we use in our production! :)

I test our internal stuff. The company i work for blends and extrudes/pelletizes plastics and sells it in pellet form to molding companies. ALOT of stuff sold in in the States and a few Canadian companies. I started out on the floor running an extruder for 4 years, then blending the plastics for 4 years, then foreman for 5 years and for the last 4 years i have worked in the lab in formulations. I test all the plastic regrinds we purchase then use bits and pieces of our different suppliers regrinds and pretty much make like a cake recipe with it. I make sure on a small scale that the final product (pellets) test out to what our Customers want. If it does then i approve it going to large scale production and move on to the next Customer.

here is our website, nothing flashy, very small tight knit company. There is a photo of the lab i work in in the "About us" section with the guy who used to do my job before he retired  http://www.canuckcompounders.com/

If it was a work related injury and from the sounds of it, if you were awarded compensation, then your previous employer was found negligent in providing safe work/ environment and it should not be your fault. In any case, this is private and nothing your previous employer should share also in the event they are called because it was not within your control. In any case of course any employer will avoid hiring employees who have had work related injury for various reasons 1. because some others do ruin it and are known to abuse the workers compensation/ better known as milking the system. 2. You may not be as reliable because of possible recurrences from your previous injury.

You do not have to declare such information.

We are a molding/ extrusion/ fabrication company. We have 18 plants in US and Canada. (5 locations in Ontario - one is a gaskets plant) :)

My location mainly produces Injection Moulded fittings. http://www.ipexna.com/

We buy plastic pellets from several companies. :) We mostly use PVC, CPVC some ABS.

So you test for viscosity all that?? Very cool

Yup, we deal in mostly PolyPro and TPO's. Our major customer right now is Home Products, they make the plastic totes you see in Walmart. I test melt flows(viscosity), notched izods, flex and tensile modulus, also do alot of -30 testing for everything that comes in our doors or goes out the doors.  We have only the one company, been going for 30 years now. Ive been here 17 of them

It isn't privacy act exactly.. It's more of human rights pertaining to discriminatory employment law. Even with a forgiven criminal record, that should never be blatantly laid out as the reason for non candidacy during recruitment.

Then again, that's how it is in canada, I would not know if it is the same in USA however our laws are pretty close.

And if you are dealing with an existing condition or long term ailment janey the employer could worry about accommodating disability also.

My advice is you just would not necessarily need to volunteer such information even when pressed. :)

Unfortunately that's not how it is in the states. There are a number of questions that are off limits during a job interview but asking if you have sued a former employer is not one of them. Janey is in a difficult position that doesn't make it easy for her to find work. If she tells the truth most employers won't hire her. If she lies about the lawsuit and they find out, she'll probably be fired, and if she refuses to answer they won't hire her.

People have become so litigious here in the states that they ruin it for the people who have legitimate reasons for suing an employer. Tort reform would change a lot here, but many of the people who make our laws are lawyers, and in no hurry to change the status quo. I was an employer for 30 years in California with up to 100 employees, and I had only one former employee try to sue me for wrongful termination.  She was an alcoholic, would get drunk at work frequently, and tried to sue her previous 3 employers for the same reason. Needless to say her suit was dismissed.
