I told you back in 2006 and 2007 this would happen..... and now it is. The GOP ain't going to fight this. This is 100% going to happen.

WSJ: GOP to Battle Obama over Net Neutrality Rules

Republicans will be stepping up the fight this month against the Obama administration’s proposals to control broadband Internet providers in the battle over net neutrality, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The Federal Communications Commission is set to vote on new regulations in February that would classify broadband as a utility and make providers face far greater government restrictions.

Supporters of the regulations say they are being created to safeguard net neutrality, the notion that all Internet traffic should be treated the same, with one speed for all online traffic.

However, Federal Communications Commission Commissioner Mike O'Reilly has admitted that web surfers would be hit with an "immediate" new tax for their Internet use if net neutrality becomes the law.

O’Reilly said that if the FCC sides with President Barack Obama, who threw his support behind net neutrality after the November elections, Internet providers would promptly pass a new set of costs on to their customers.

But Republicans, who are set to run both the House and the Senate, believe the proposals are another case of government overreach and plan to fight them. Conservatives, in particular, say that the strict controls in the industry will hold back Internet innovation for years to come.

“The regulatory tools at the FCC’s disposal are outdated and its previous efforts to create rules to regulate the Internet were struck down by the courts,” South Dakota Sen. John Thune said.

“It’s hard to imagine that its new attempt will escape legal challenges and avoid the kind of regulatory uncertainty that harms Internet innovation and investment.”

Republicans could introduce legislation to block the proposals or slash the FCC’s budget, or they may even attempt to apply the rarely-used Congressional Review Act that permits Congress to invalidate rules brought out by federal agencies, the Journal noted. But the president has the power to veto any such move.

“There are many paths that opponents of strong net neutrality rules can follow in the Congress,” Gene Kimmelman, president of the group Public Knowledge, which supports strong net neutrality rules, told the newspaper. “However if the White House remains firmly in favor of strong net neutrality rules, all legislation is likely to fail.”

In the upcoming weeks before the FCC votes on the new measures, Republican-led committees in both chambers are expected to put FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler through the ringer while attempting to prevent the passage of the new regulations on broadband providers, the Journal reported.

I guess i'm confused now if NN is good or bad... obviously the "fast lanes for businesses" is a bad idea. But, what's this new bit about passing a tax down on customers?

Just watched this and now I feel a bit ill for some reason.

I was ill in 2006/2007 when I learned about it and what would happen. But no one would listen to us Conspiracy Theorists. :)

Here come IPv6.... or I think that is how they will lock it down.. but that remains to be seen. Just a Theory. lol

IPv6 is needed. IP address are starting to run out with. You may think its impossible but there are only around 4 billion total possible IP combinations at IPv4 and there are some ranges like the the 10 range (owned by IBM) are owned by companies.

Now as for this tax. Never heard of it

I am very well aware of the IPv4 imitations. Does not change my opinion.

And no the 10 range is not owned by IBM. That is a private set of address like 192.168.0.0  --- 192.168.255.255 with a subnet 255.255.0.0 or Class B.

10.0.0.0 is a class A address with this subnet of 255.0.0.0. Anyone can used this range as long not on the Net. You must have a routeable address... not a private address. But IBM does have a Class A or two.... just not the 10 range.

And IPv4 is still in use. I am speaking of if they removed support for IPv4 Internet wide. That changes everything. Hard to control the ports used in IPv4 like 80 for web, 443 SSL, 25 SMTP, 21 FTP, 23 Telnet... and the list goes on. Will they have more control over ports in IPv6 that they don't in IPv4. Will one day being able to host your own server how you want to.. is what I think could be in jeopardy. XI servers will have to pay more due to the traffic used. Like Netflix users will have to pay more. But again just a theory on the IPv6.

Lets pass the bill first then find out what's in it.

Your statements here show you for net neutrality.... Go read what it is about. Its so people using netflix do not have to pay more as well as netflix not having to pay a premium for boost in speed to their network. IPv6 is more secure than IPv4.

IPV6 has already been around for years.

Yes it has but hasn't really started taking off in terms of usage until the last couple of years.

To sum it up.... the internet will be like watching TV. If you want more content you will pay. It will be like a utility and government regulated. There for you will pay taxes on the usage you use.. bandwidth. And yes Netflix users will pay more. This is just the start.

As for me being for NN. Bullshit... like I said pass the bill first then find out what it is about. You are going to as Sammy said.... be fed lots of spin. You will be convinced of a Lie once again much like Affordable Health Care. Nothing affordable about it and 100% about CONTROL.

NN is more about the large suppliers of bandwidth for me it would be rogers ,bell etc . You guys would be the same its the large telephone and cable companies. They want to double dip into the money jar. So I get 120 gig a month to download at upto (hate that term) 3.5 meg. I hook up to netflix watch a movie that is 1.5 gig in size. Alls well. Except the large telecoms want netflix to pay for the same bandwidth. Now it a lot more complex than that netflix does have to have servers in the telecom's server banks etc same with google for better access to youtube.  So this tax will be netflix charging more so they can pay more to the telecoms. The telecoms will start creating packages for better access to things like youtube , torrent sites, netflix, anything or any site they feel people will pay more to see. So just like all the bundling they do now on cable and satellite you're going to see it from your isp. You want a better connection to netflix well for 4.99 more a month we will supply you a direct connection to netflix the weather network's web site and a few other useless sites that will be willing to pay comcast more for better visibility to the customers of comcast. Of course if you don't want to pay for better access to netflix for no additional charge you can use comcasts version of netflix for no extra few just a small monthly fee a few dollars more then netflix charges.Because we do not want to reduce competition on the internet. Anyway expect to pay 10 or 20 dollars more a month for what you do online. Including gaming. Want a better ping 5 bucks and we will reduce the nodes you pass through. If we can't do that we will slow down those from whatever server your on.

Already in place here as part and parcel of normal ISP behaviour.  Traffic is throttled.  I pay extra for an "optimised" gaming connection.

It has nothing to do with "neutrality", taxation, government, conspiracies, the men in black or aliens.  It is called capitalism.  Look cheerful and pay up!

Well, you would, wouldn't you?!

Here's just one very brief and simple explanation by a consumers' organisation here:

http://blogs.which.co.uk/technology/broadband/whos-managing-your-broadband-speed/

A matter of supply and demand.  Those who use most tend to pay most.

sounds like big brother is helping their corporate buddies again to rape the people out of as much money as they can...kinda sounds like all those fair trade treaties they have with those slave labor nations.thats where 90% of american factories moved to after the treaties were signed.so big corporate america could makle its mega profits and dont worry about benifits or pay or even the EPA...

This has less to do with you and I but business. If you are a small company trying to get into the streaming market against a dominate company... say a HULU type business vs Comcast... their deep pockets will allow them to basically squash you like a bug by preventing you from even doing business and providing your product to your customers. Or if you are Microsoft, and want more bandwidth than Sony in a finite amount of space, you can pay the big telecoms 100's of millions. Of course Sony cant have that. So they outbid Microsoft. Who exactly benefits the most from this? Who loses the most since in a situation like this neither of them, even with their wads of cash, dont see that much of an improvement. Its still a battle for space. Oh and of course we get to pay for all of this with higher xbox-live costs.

Unlike many things people like to compare them to there is a set total amount of bandwidth available. Like cellphones, water, electricity or others. You cannot wish up more even if you have 5 billion to pay. We have this problem here in my area with water. We have a set amount and no way to get more of it. Yet developers want to build more and more and more. They need water so what little there is gets divided among more places leading to shortages and rationing. Because of this new developments are huge battles between residents, developers and the city council that wants the tax money.

Imagine you have a local delivery company but Amazon can pay the city huge bucks to have Amazon-only lanes on the streets. UPS wont like this so it becomes a price war. The most streets go to the highest bidder. Neither would you when you need to go to work. Sound good to you? Of course in a situation like this the city would make a ton of money. But what if every street in the city were privately owned? The city... and by proxy you... would get nothing. If anything you lose what you already have. The free market is great but should not be the knee-jerk solution to everything as tho the system was infallible and can do no wrong.
