My little Honda has a crack on the top of the radiator. A friend of a friend said that he could replace the radiator and including labor it would be $170. Is this fair? I'm trying to save up for it, but I still don't have the money.  Please don't say buy a new car because I'm struggling just to buy food at this point.

Need some advise please.

Janey what is the sub model ....Ex Dx Lx or Se that may make a difference but you can order from this website with free delivery and installation should be around 50 bucks  + coolant cost around another 20 bucks

http://www.autopartswarehouse.com

Have used them in the past and had good service with fast delivery...

on a side note careful not to over heat the car or the repairs could be far more in cost

Can of blacker pepper works wonders for a temp repair depends on the size of the leak......

and has no adverse effects to the cooling system.

Very true tried and tested.....But her tank is more then likely plastic and will expand when under pressure and temperature....

Janey if it is metal try Buds Idea for a hold me over but if its plastic it may not work

Oh and the coarser the black pepper the better

In the Uk there is a bottle of fluid called "rad weld"..or it comes in a tube and crumbles like a stock cube...these are both great products and very cheap.

JB weld if the crack is clearly visible on the outside of the radiator, and as long as the crack hasn't already started to expand there's a product called AlumaSeal Stop Leak. An additive you simply pour into the radiator and as it circulates through the system the aluminum deposits in it build up in the crack kinda solidifying as the engine temp rises. Between those 2 temp fixes, you should give yourself plenty of time to save up money for a new radiator. However $170 is fair if you are talking normal repair shop prices. Your best bet is to find and order the radiator yourself and just have the shop install it, if you don't have someone who can do it for you. Will save yourself about $50 bucks give or take.

advanced auto sells a plastic repair goo.  its a 2 part mix that you mix up and spread on the cracked area.  i used this stuff on ladys radiator over 7 years ago and the radiator still doesnt leak.      if its the plastic top area of the radiator this will work for you.   the goo is about 8  dollars and even an idiot can apply it

My 1989 had a plastic radiator so does your 93. :). The top and bottom part is def plastic but the fins are aluminum.  They can't be fixes when they break.

The radiator cost from $70 to $150 depending were you get one. Not hard to change out but while doing it you probably should replace the hoses. They get dry rot after time. One on top and one on bottom.

And it always can get worse..... but it always gets better.

Battery for what? your car? If you put a new one in and it dies you probably have a bad diode in the alternator. It thinks it still needs to charge when the car is turned off and drains the battery. If batteries for some kind of toy.... get an electric one. lol

yeah she ran the accord under another car. when the hood crunched back it took a chunk of the radiator top. found the chunk and out it back in place and smothered it with that goo.  have also used the same stuff on leaky joints on the hot tub.  works well

Must be some kind of epoxy. So you mix two compounds?

Any temporary fix is just putting a bandage over it. hot coolant inside the radiator builds up pressure and will find a weak spot to leak out. that cracked spot is the one sooner or later will leak out coolant.  unless you replace it with a new radiator if you want to keep the car for a while. it doesn't need to be Honda radiator because it's expensive and your 93 accord is turning 20 yrs old car.

Just put a Rad in my 98 accord LX a couple weeks ago.I got a cheap one off of ebay $47 free shipping.

Seems to be working ok so far.Of coarse I installed it myself and reused the coolant and hoses But I did have to buy another coolant temp sensor.Another $20.The old one refused to come out.I also have an aftermarket External transmission cooler on my car so I didn't have to worry about the Tranny fluid and lines.

I'de say that's a good price as long as the person doing it Knows what he's doing.
