I want to go to Scotland so bad one day. So beautiful! Ah dear lady before you get too carried away let me describe a few things (I live on the border, visit Scotland often and have worked and lived there) Scotland is divided into East and West as opposed to the normal North and South of most countries. East - Quiet reserved people with a strict religious past, they frown on alcohol, it rains a lot, it's cold, when it's warm on the coast it's foggy, scenery ok but not that great, if you like golf this is Mecca and Vegas rolled into one West - It rains, then it rains again, when it isn't raining it's going to rain, when the rain stops it's snowing, the wind howls 90% of the year, when the sun comes out so do the midges if they like you death is the only salvation, the people are wild, and still love fighting , they hate the English are staunchly Scottish and either drunk or very anti drink, the scenery goes from stunning to fantastic, some places are fairly remote, the islands are lovely, don't expect broadband or even your phone to work in large parts of it. Olive makes me laugh, coming from a civilsed country ffs he lives in France?? they eat frogs, snails and raw meat?? We drive on the correct side of the road, sometimes thats the only side, many many roads in the North and Scotland are single track, some of the better ones have tarmac, sheep wander all over most of them. I tell you all this but please please please try to stay clear of the cities they're awful, for peace and tranquility choose west and South West Ireland, for scenery west Coast Scotland North of Glasgow, the Lake District is nice but very crowded, my county Northumberland is beautiful and packed with history and castles/roman forts and wall. Cornwall/Devon and North Wales are nice but can be busy, a beautiful and as yet undiscovered tourist wise is the North and North West of Ireland, as Americans you'll be fine in (London)derry and Belfast whereas us other Brits aren't, very important slow down do not try to visit 'Europe' in one go do just one country and see it properly. Honestly I really just want to backpack around Scotland and view the scenery and castles. I don't mind the rain actually I don't mind the cold either. London sounds delightful but there are other parts of England that sound way more inviting. Ireland is another country that sounds incredible and Italy *Sigh* RobMc 1 Awards

In Europe there is of course a lot of history and I suppose we get used to it, within one hours drive of my home there are 15 major castles, many Bastles (fortified houses), the Roman wall and its forts, prehistoric and Iron age forts including the largest in UK, dozens of battle sites, Lindisfarne Island which was the first recorded raid by the Vikings, Cathedrals and churches dating back 1000 - 5000 years etc etc, theres even a certain Washington Hall, where you know who came from, and if you drive 2 hours theres even more. We of course are used to it and some of the best sites are not even publicised so anyone coming over here ask our UK members for advice, it will save time, money and disappointment, as theres not a great deal left of some of them as you say.

Oi! I was born and raised there! It is, however, like the Curate's Egg. I can assure prospective visitors that there are no "5000" year-old cathedrals and churches in the UK (or indeed anywhere else in the world). Single track roads are commonplace everywhere in the countryside in the UK, Olive. Such fun when one meets a tractor coming in the opposite direction! RobMc and Olive 2 Awards

Yea my bad punctuation I meant everything over this timescale (i.e. prehistoric, we have a multitude of cup and rings) not just the churches , you might have been born there but not many want to remain living in London but have to work, and that undoubtedly is where the jobs are, I stand corrected me old cockney m8, us Northerners divn't taak proppa yea naw!
