It will always hurt. Last May I had to put my Billy down after he was bleeding internally. He was 11. I was with his mother when he and all his siblings were born in my Garage. He was an English pointer. He and I drove from eastern Canada 5 times to hunt pheasants in Iowa. As with you and your dog he never let me out of his site. At my fishing camp he never let me sleep alone. He even managed to chase Mrs Weed to the other bed lol, She loved him as much as I did. After 2 weeks I couldn't take the going to look out the window to check on him any more. I started looking for the Titan's Little BooBoo you see in my avatar. I love her lots, she is not Bill or Dolly or Dan or Ricky or Ginger or any of the others but she is BooBoo and I love her more every day. I wake up early every morning and she is waiting for me. We dog owners love our dogs because they give us their unconditional love. If you leave the house and come back in 10 min or 10 hours it makes no difference to them they are just happy we are back. These type of friends who ask nothing of us are so special. In a few weeks it will be the 4th anniversary of the day I had to have my Lab, Patches put down after 15 years. I will never forget because it was 2 days before the birth of my youngest daughter. We adopted another Lab a year later, but I still come home after work, grab the leash, and accidently call out the wrong name every now and then. The pain has gotten less, but the memories are strong as ever. I wish you the strength to get thru this, and hope that you find another dog to fill, but not replace, this hole in your life. Labs are incredible and more lovable than many humans and I can see from the tribute you posted that yours was loved as much as humanly possible. For my family rescuing another pup from a bad situation and providing her with a new home helped us . . not to forget . . but to fill the emptiness. My wife sat here reading each and every one with tears streaming down her face. For those who were wondering, a couple years ago we got another yellow lab to help keep Ozzy active and from getting bored. She was 2 when we got her and her name is Moe. For the moment we're a one Lab family, but Moe is a handful and loves to play. She's still trying to figure out where Ozzy went but we're keeping her busy. Here is Moe and Ozzy a couple months ago. I didn't realize it until a couple hours ago, but my wife snapped a picture of my daughter and me saying our final goodbye to Ozzy just after the vet administered the sedative. By the time the final injection came a few minutes later, he was sound asleep and no longer in pain. I wish all humans could leave this world as dignified and loved as some of our K-9 companions do.
