i used to trust and promote microsoft essential for friends and family people with no important datas on the computer, but realized it didnt do the job correctly at all.

 

the only one that gives me full efficiency for years is ESET SMART SECURITY (best known as NOD32 for its anti-virus software)

 

that or maybe f-secure. (these people know what they are doing and they are doing it right)

What everybody misses on this topic is MS is the only one that wants to get rid of viruses. The rest try to make money off of viruses. So who do you think is working harder at stopping this problem ?

Labob is correct.  And let's be serious - who better to know the threat vectors better than Microsoft.  That is, who better to protect Windows than Microsoft themselves. 

 

Do not run multiple AV programs together - that's redundant, wasteful of computer resources, and may conflict in unexpected ways.  That's conventional wisdom from way back, and it frankly just makes sense. 

 

Do not download MS Security Essentials from Major Geeks or anywhere other than from Microsoft here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download

 

If you're on Win8 - forgetaboutit.  It's already installed and should be running.  No additional AV required.  Check the security app in the Control Panel if you need to verify that.

 

Where is the XP version of MSSE?  Doesn't exist.  Who cares?  XP is dead.  Not supported.  Move on.  Or use Avast or some other 3rd party freeware.

hmmm ok i completely disagree with djmot and labob and others here, but then its your choice, u get MSE for free (well not really as u paid for your windows), but if u really need something to protect your datas and system, u wont be using it.

 

but thinking they do it for free then they are the only ones that wants to get rid of viruses is completely wrong. its part of they business, thus they get money from giving it for free of course they do. its weird u dont see this. anyway, good luck then with your shitty free AV.

avast is perfect...its free and it fully protects system...like i said above post been using it for 5 yrs now no issues no problems and no virus ever!!! and its not as big resource hog as most others like mcafee and norton..which bog pc down horribly....avast i have no issues with it in that dpt..i always leave it on when gaming as well...never bogs my game either..just saying

If somebody found a way to stop all the viruses 2 things would happen.

1 all antivirus company's would be out of business.

2 Microsoft sales would jump a lot.

any report thay says norton actually does its job without fucking up your computer is a report thats full of shit. norton is THE worst program you can put on your computer

I had a whole post written up for @@ChknFngr but deleted before posting.  Some battles you just have to decide whether to go into or just lob the MOAB into the middle of it and be done.  I thought I already did that with my previous post, but whatever.  Labob once again did a great job of stating the position I was going to anyway, so it all got said just the same.  Good on 'ya, Labob.

But...

You know the real threat to any computer?  The person sitting behind the keyboard, that's who!  Yes, there are some attacks that come from directions that are out of the realm of the user's control, but the VAST majority of infections come at the hands of someone who let their guard down.  Let their vigilance slip.  Believed a hoax was real.  Clicked before thinking (and then immediately thought, "FUCK!!!")  You name it, but the person behind the keyboard is almost always ultimately at fault and could have avoided the attack.

Just be careful what you do.  Don't live your on-line life in fear, suit up your computer in reasonable armor, and then get out there and have fun.

That's just my $0.02; take it or leave it in the take a penny, leave a penny dish at the checkout.

As a general rule I never install anything Microsoft unless I absolutely have to. Not that they make bad products. But more often than not the specialists are better than the do-it-all companies. I have used Avast for years and it always works well. But as was said there is no substitute to being careful. Like condoms.

I heard idiots rave about Essentials. I used Avira which works ok, but is not that impressive and you get a nag screen. It is free though. Well, within a week of Essentials I had two infections. I won't bother with it again. Back to Avira which I like because it runs during gaming without bothering anything. I had Avast at one time but on MY system would not run and game at the same time. I am not one to turn off the antivirus programs to game. 

 What I will tell you is absolutely top notch and free.  It is Kasperskys VIRUS REMOVAL TOOL  it is NOT an anti virus. You download it and install it, run it, it cleans your system squeaky clean and then you uninstall it. It is a somewhat large download, like 110meg. But it is the best removal tool I have found. So, I compromise and run not the best antivirus and once in a while I run the virus removal tool. Then what Mott says. You are the best defense against viruses just by your actions. Oh, and if you run a MS operating system that has UAC? Use it. It does its job and helps out too.

I use Sophos AV on my PC (my version uses the Sophos and AVG engines. I have a Sophos firewall running at the edge of my home network) as well as Malwarebytes free version http://www.malwarebytes.org/
