If you Googled it you will know that it is a sound error, you are probably running an onboard Realtek soundcard, yes there are a lot of possible solutions out there but the only one that ever works for me is to totally uninstall Cod4 then update your sound drivers, then reinstall Cod4 back to your new drivers, it always works for me after this fix.

Damn, looks like a bit of work then, and I suppose I willalso have to uninstall all the patches too, bloody windows 8, real pain at times, I got over the stupid app system by downloading StartIsBack, which makes 8 run more like a normal windows program, and only cost a couple of dollars!

Patches will be automatically uninstalled with the game m8, i think we have a link somewhere on the webby from where to get them all, i just kept all mine on CD's but also have them saved somewhere else on my PC. I would try all the other possible fixes you saw on Google before this, some people in the clan say some of these have worked for them but no worked for me, only the uninstall option works for me.

Well I took a chance and downloaded the updates for Realtek, then rather than uninstalling etc tried it out, no issues at all, so now I have at long last got my XI downloader to work, plus no iw3 errors any more, mind you hasn't improved my game performance :(

Make sure your USB mic is always plugged in. Remembered that this morning when I had the same problem.

Could be that even tho the USB mic is still set as the default sound recorder it wont actually load the drivers unless its plugged in. So when this game... only this game for some reason... tries to run it wont. Just a guess because when I did plug it back in while the computer was running the drivers were loaded normally and the game worked.

Having mic plugged in or not don't make any difference to me at all, it don't work for me, as you said when you Googled it most of these so called fixes are useless to most, what might work for one might not work for somebody else, it's just trial and error until you find out what works best for you.

Go into the main COD4 folder, then open the 'Miles' folder.
Find 'mssmp3.asi' and rename it to 'mssmp3.bat'.

That disabled the background music. This is the only way for my system...

It  don't work for everyone, different things work for different people, indeed that is if anything works at all.

It might be a 4 month old thread but if you check through the forums this problem has been popping up for years and it will still be puzzling people for years to come i think, so this is still a very relevant topic.

Some unhelpful ideas:

1. Reboot your PC, keep trying until you get tired

2. Wipe your OS and re-install everything, if the problem persists, follow step 1

On another note:

I have windows 8.1 too, occasionally I get the iw3mp.exe error it normally has to do with a new map being loaded or some rendering failure with a particular mod. There are many factors that contribute to this instability, sound card, gfx card, drivers, directx, overlay software (e.g. xfire). I did not have this issue on Windows 7 x64 if that informs you in any way. I have an ASUS P5 Q Deluxe with RealTek Audio that I used for the longest time before switching to Creative X-Fi Sound Blaster MB PCIe. Anyhoo, this game is old and directx 9 is becoming a legacy with time. At some point with newer OS this game will completely start breaking down.
