In all likelihood, if you do not perform an in-place upgrade, and if you have an OEM license, you will need to install and activate the download with the OEM key, therefore perpetuating the OEM license.  From what I understand, if you do an in-place upgrade, you are effectively converting your OEM license to a Retail license.  Then later, you can use the new Retail key to install Win10 wherever you want - including on a new computer or a rebuild.  This is what I have read, but the reality is actually up to MS.

Are you saying if I do an upgrade instead of a clean install it should work?

Afaik you can do a clean install when you upgrade 1st and after that do a clean install.  On the same machine you don't need a product key - MS knows your computer already. If you want to install it on another machine you need to find out the Windows 10 key after the upgrade. For example with Windows Product Key Viewer.

I haven't installed or upgraded Windows 10 yet. I don't know if there is another way to find the product key after the upgrade.

To those who have installed or upgraded already, do you need to create or sign in to a MS account? It wasn't necessary to do so with 8 or 8.1. Especially not when you installed Windows offline. I would rather not have a MS account.

You can run the following command in CMD to find the product key associated with your Windows installation:

paste this in cmd prompt to retrive your product key  i used this on win 8  should still work on win 10

wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey

Or you go here:

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html

Going to clone my disks today and 3 times of my OS, to a small drive.

The Game-HHD is to be cloned to my External USB Drive, once per 6 months. For Multiplayer, a SSD makes no benefit as you always wait for others.

that file is 5.79gb did it yesterday.........

if you want to force W10 to down load its simple, open CDM as Administrator and type  wuauclt.exe/updatenow,  [before you do this make sure you have all windows updates done] now open windows update and check.......

If it does not work make sure your updates has  this in there or it wont work period    KB3035583,without it you cannot force the update

and so far my win10 broke  couldn't get tiles or some of taskbar to work in end had to restore it,to get them back

About MS Accounts and Win 10:

To answer my earlier question myself ... Apparently you can still install Win10 with a local account - good.

On the page where you can login with your MS Account click "Don't have an account" and on the next page choose "local account" - or install Win10 disconnected from the internet.

No MS Account needed - that means no data being sent to MS SpyDrive.

If you have already installed 10 with MS account and you don't want that, you can disconnect from it in the user settings and create a local account.

From Dj's post that I lost . From the winsupersite  http://winsupersite.com/windows-10/windows-10-clean-install-using-media-creation-tool#slide-0-field_images-57241

The other way to clean install from a valid Windows 7 or 8.1 system is to use the same media creation tool but instead of creating a USB drive to boot from just select the option to Upgrade this PC now. That will download the Windows 10 ISO and begin the upgrade directly in the current OS.

I then selected to keep nothing from the Windows 7 OS in this case so that meant no settings, files or anything was transferred into the new Windows 10 installation. I was also prompted to go through the entire Out Of Box Experience (OOBE) by selecting my basic settings including logging in with my Microsoft Account.

When I logged into the desktop it was a clean installation of Windows 10 with only my info provided during OOBE there.

This was such a clean install that the Recovery option that is normally available for 30 days after upgrading Windows 7 or 8.1 was not even present.

I then checked the system page and it showed Windows 10 was activated and ready to go.

There is no reason to believe this same process would not work with a properly activated Windows 8.1 system as well.

See the screenshot gallery for a walkthrough of the entire process.

Let us know how your own upgrade situations go in the comments below.

In-place upgrade from 8.1 on an Alienware X51 with no issues whatsoever. I like the feel of it.

@@Labob , with the clean install, did you also have to reinstall your other software again?

I have not done it yet but that is the procedure I will follow. And yes after the clean install you will have to reload anything you want to use again. Nice fresh start. I promise myself I will not use my main hard drive to test any other programs. Or load any other useless apps that I think are cool. No more clogged Os I promise :)
