When you reboot your computer (after the screen blanks out), it should recognize that the system crashed and gives you the choice of safe mode or normal... If it doesn't...it's your monitor. Power supplies will degrade over time and lose some of their rated power output. If the psu was boarder line to begin with it could be a problem now that it is older.
