I have not switched. I played around with it on display computers at Best Buy. If you have a touch screen device it works great but for a mouse the gestures seem strange to use.

I am currently using Windows 8 Pro and am loving it!

The display takes a bit to get used to but there are some amazing features, the desktop feels weird without the classic start menu but you soon get used to the new one. Overall I find it easy to use and much much quicker.

I got it for free however..

Get a free program called "Classic Shell" http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/ for Windows 8. Boot into the desktop, have a Start menu, and you get a much improved, faster Windows 7 experience, and you don't have to deal with the tablet interface if you don't want to. I have it on my laptop and with Windows 8 under the hood, it's excellent. I plan on installing COD-WAW on it over the weekend, seeing as it has an nVidia graphics chip. If all goes well, I may migrate my Windows 7 gaming rig over to it in a few months. I've had it on the laptop since the end of August (MSDN member), and I really like it with Classic Shell.

More details on Classic Shell here: http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/45430/Classic-Shell

http://www.techspot.com/review/561-windows8-vs-windows7/page5.html

"Microsoft seemed to hit full stride with Windows 7, developing a fast and efficient operating system. Thankfully it seems Windows 8 continues to build on that pattern as we found it to be on par with and ocassionally faster than 7.

The improvements that have been made to startup and shutdown times are self-evident, and no doubt a major focus on the new OS' development as this will particularly benefit laptop and tablet users. Another notable improvement was seen in multimedia performance. This was first observed when running PCMark 7 and later confirmed when we ran x264 HD Benchmark 5.0 and our HandBrake encoding test.

Most of the other tests saw little to no difference between the two operating systems. This was especially true for the gaming benchmarks, but most surprising on the IE tests which we figured would have shown a big advantage for IE10, but not so."

Joe: FYI, Windows8, per se, is for Americans only; you folks in the frigid north need to get the Canadian version, Canuck8. There are a number of differences. For example, instead of a question mark when using Wordpad, you get an "Eh" - stuff like that.

Windows 8 sucks enough that they fired the guy responsible for it (same guy saved Win7).

This pretty much sums it up:

Thanks PingLo!! Very informative. The review consolidated everything I have heard.

Using my computer for mostly work (Production), I do not see the benefits of this new OS. I get the idea of what the Metro interface is going for. But, unless you are a media/information junky, it is too much. The metro interface reminds me of the television interface from the movie Idiocracy.

Also.... Does anyone find it stupid to have to download a separate program to force the Windows 8 UI to function in a manner that we have all grow accustom to using over the past 15+ years? Why is that not a setting within Windows 8.

I think you can just download the real thing and look for yourself, I do believe his commentary was germane to this discussion, the graphics were obviously just to illustrate the point. I really wish Win8 was better, there is no point in making another Vista. Complex items designed by committee are likely to be as bad as one designed by a single person in a bubble.

Video REDACTED see video above....

I'm all for resetting how people use stuff if it makes sense. This is the MS cycle which brought us: BOB, Millennium, Vista and now Win8.

I of course get the fact that I love the following:

1) Using Apple devices

and

2) Making money from MS' fuck ups;

I've always said I'd be perfectly happy to make money some other way if folks started using a platform that didn't require my assistance.

Was talking to a guy at work yesterday about old computers and such. He recalled his first computer with an actual GUI. Once he began describing it, I said you been on computers longer than Windows 8 ain't you? (he's been on computers since back in the eighties)

One of the first windows was apparently very similar in looks to win8. we've come so far, and they revert back to day one. lol.

Oh well, I'll stick with my windows 7.

I've never seen any of them that old, I didn't get to start messing with computers till Win95 and later.

That pic looks like it would really suck to get around the system in.

Windows 8 is not yet setup to support high end graffix cards. I play in eye infinity across three monitors so the uglyness is amplified. In fact steam is now moving to a linux platform because they are so disssatisfied with Windows 8.

I also got a free copy of 8, and I installed it and had 14 difffferent driver issues. In there behalf I did install it 3 months beforre the release, hopefully they have those bugs worked out by now. The only real benifit of windows 8 is for touch screen computers or tablets.

If you want to check it out before you buy it contact me at [email protected].

I picked it up for 39.00 and d/l it from Microsoft, still av until the end of the month for that price, after that you will have to pay full price.

It takes getting used to, but I build and maintain computers, including a pretty good size network. So I need to have hands on with as many OS I can.
