Details just coming in.  It is being speculated that Russian seperatists shot the jet down. If true, this is going to create a shit storm for the Russians.

They were at a altitude of over 30.000 feet so clearly will be a shoot down.....surface to air or air to air will be the next question

Another Malaysian flight and another Bowing 777.

I bet no other pilot flies that airspace again for a very long time.

Can't imagine falling from 35,000+- feet. S

Yup for it to be a shootdown it would have to have been a big missile and controlled. Not some shoulder fired heat seeking missile. Meaning a professional military that possesses such weapons and more importantly knows how to use them. I highly doubt this would have been deliberate while knowing what kind of plane it was.  Keep in mind the US Navy, with its advanced weapons and tracking systems, once shot down an Airbus. Its not much condolence to the families but at least this time they can get the data recorders and find out, hopefully, what happened.

Those black boxes are indestructible. The only reason they are ever "destroyed" is because somebody doesn't want you knowing what it recorded.

I think the pro-Russian rebels shot it down and are now back-tracking to deny any responsibility because Putin is throwing a hissy fit.

One of the rebel units tweeted a picture of a captured BUK-M1 missile system last month, then deleted their tweet just today. Now they're trying to deny that they have this technology even though they've shot down a number of Ukraine military aircraft with them over the last few weeks.

Here is a picture of the system that they think brought down the jet.

Hmm, well if this is so and the rebels do have such weapons then its likely they did it. Itchy trigger fingers and not making sure of their targets. Kind of hard to do when you dont have centralized air trafffic systems to know what is what.

Well now they confirm it was a missile and have some kind of tracking data for it. They wont say where it came from but likely know that also. Or at least a very good idea.

Why in hell would a commercial pilot take one of the world's largest passenger jets over a war zone with a recent history of shooting down planes?

Watch for the finger of incompetence to be pointed at Malaysian for planning the flight through a war zone. Saving money in fuel and time by flying a more direct route but sacrificing safety.....obviously. Idiots. The Russians have a clear history of not liking airliners around when tensions are hi (re: kal 007). There is good reason for that, none the less airlines should stay clear of Russians and Americans when they are pissed. Both the Russians and the US like to shoot down airliners.

this seems to raise a red flag here....are you telling me that plane took a course that was no where near goin to russia/ukraine border....end up re positioning the plane once again after take off and still made all that way undetected by anyone and after all these months just now finding it at russia / ukraine something very fishy here even since take off nothing has added up ...even now...i just find it hard to believe that the plane was shot down hours after take off and it took so many months to find? really? i think something smells worse than tuna here...

There have been warnings issued for commercial flights in that region since April. I guess Malaysian Airlines felt the shorter route and fuel savings was worth the risk. Fucking idiots.

Here is a screen shot I just took of all commercial flights in that part of the world. Looks like eastern Ukraine is pretty quiet "now".
