I recommend staying away from a USB headset, I have a Turtle Beach headset with USB and it likes to act up.  I highly recommend a Razor headset if you got $, also good one is the steel series.

I wish I would have gotten a Razor to replace the old one, but a buddy recommended a turtle beach.  So I am stuck for a bit with it (hoping the kids might break it! lol)

I have the Logitech G35 and it is awesome...I'd recommend it depending on your budget.  I'm a big fan of the Logitech gaming products for what it's worth, might sway my opinion.  :)

I use Plantonics GameCom 780 gaming headset. Been using them for about 3 years now, can not fault them and very reasonably priced.

Z22 Turtle Beach. Very nice. It is combo USB + analog... for mic/amp + audio... if that kind of thing matters. Also comfortable.

These are somewhat like the ones I have. I have 2 pair now(just in case), but the original ones I have had for over 10+ years and still work great.

has anyone else had USB problems before? Also, if i were to get a Razor headset, is there a specific one you would recommend? I would like to stay below $100 on decent one weather i go with plantronics(which is what i just had), Razor, or Logitech.

PS thanks everyone so far on the feedback!

I never had issues with that.

The only problem that I noticed is if you brake the mic on the headset itself, you can't combine the with Stereomix(er) within Windows, with a Mic jack.

I had a MS headset on USB (lx-3000 I think) and the Mic broke off. I used a other headset with jacks combined and Windows still saw the Mic. Of course you can disable it, but Stereomix kept failing. I think that the driver can be the issue or just unlucky with the product.

The amount of peeps talking has nothing to do with usb or jacks, I have never noticed any difference in usb versus jacks, Maybe give a little bit of sound quality to jacks, But as far as gaming goes you cant beat the speed and response of usb... I have a logitech 5.1 THX sub system that i bought 10 years ago with a 8 inch sub and liquid filled tweeter two ways that I will put up against any avg home system... And its all usb, and i can use that for sounds and still use usb mic also.. Guess the  point here is get what you want ,Sound and comfort are a personal thing, And more money doesn't mean shit...

Is a headset better for gaming than headphones and a standalone microphone? I've got a cheap mic and Sennheiser headphones(reasonably priced, good quality sound). AFAIK my microphone doesn't sound too bad..

I've used  cheap headphones with mic before the ones with just one ear piece and i found that my new gaming headset is way more better to use i find its much easier to hear the game and people talking than my old ones in the past. i found it harder to hear on game with noise in the background interrupting. one i have now is both Jack and USB plugin, its an AfterGlow. Was hard to get working at first but now i don't think i would switch to a different kind of headset or headphones.
