That's because the newly downloaded game would have been patched n'est-ce pas? Having updated Steam (at the second attempt - the first caused my PC to freeze), I am now downloading four updates, one of which was for L4D2 (23.3MB). Be warned folks that, if you haven't played for over a year and you have a copy of the game installed, it needs updating.
