Howdy Folks,

A few weeks ago some fellow XI gamers reported I sound different in-game than before. I switched to using Jabra Evolve Link Noise Cancelling headphones for WFH setup. It turns out they've a great microphone with higher sampling. These are not gaming headphones and it got me wondering if I should invest in some gaming headphones.

Naturally I started looking at surround sound phones. Typically I hate headphones but I have learned to tolerate Over-Ear headphones. It has something to do with the air pressure inside the ear canal, it makes me sick. Anyways, so I came across this review from LinuxTechTips, see below. What I really caught on to was two things, Dolby Atmos & DTS Headphone:X.. I will let you watch the review to qualify my following analysis.

Apparently, in Windows on the Microsoft Store you can try out these sound processing engines that are used in headphones as well. They offer a trial and I highly encourage to test them out on your existing headphones.. Bluetooth headphones are not supported by these engines. One thing is for sure, either of these is a big step up from a basic sound you get from Windows Sonic.

Headphones that I used for my testing:

  • Sony MDR-XB950B1
  • Jabra Evolve Link
  • V-Moda Crossfade LP

To enable the engines on your Windows OS, right click on the speaker ? icon in bottom right corner and in Spatial Sound select the engine of your choice.

Dolby Atmos:I found this to be excellent for music and movies. It brought to life, instruments that I haven't heard in the same songs. It's on sale right now for $11.99

DTS Headphone:X I ultimately ended up purchasing this for $14.99  after trying out both engines for 1 week. DTS's surround sound processing is just amazing. Not to forget, they offer customized profiles for popular gaming headphones, very versatile. Movies and music sound excellent, perhaps like 1% less than Dolby Atmos. However, when it came to gaming it has a clear advantage. Games that have been developed with spatial sounding will blow your senses. Oh, almost forgot, these adapt to earbuds as well. It's all configurable in the DTS Sound Unbound application after you install it thru the Microsoft Store.

DPS Audio is the best I have come across. I have been using it past 2 years or so, I can only tell you's to try it out to test it

Either try the free trial or hit me up for a copy if you want
