He then proceeded to walk her though the process of giving him remote access to her computer. <sigh> I have no idea what he installed on her computer but I'm sure it was malicious. I don't even begin to know how to proceed with fixing it. I had her unplug her ethernet cable even though she said the guy insisted that she keep the computer on and connected to the internet. The computer was connected for 8 hours after he called her. He also warned her not to install a new internet security software. lol She wants to start backing up her files in preparation to wipe the computer clean. She still has Windows XP and I'm not sure I even remember how that works. I plan to scan her system, look at the logs to see what was done, and then maybe do a system restore. I have no idea what this guy may have installed or what settings he changed. I believe he probably put a keylogger on and God only knows what else. The guy called from this number: 214-329-9692. I googled it and saw other stories identical to hers. Of course he had an Indian accent but an American name. He said he was calling from New Jersey but this is a Texas number, not that it matters. He was probably calling from India. Ugh! I hope he gets Crotch Rot!!! Gatorgirl, Angel, simplemod and 2 others 5 Awards

She actually believes that she didn't give the guy any information. I tried to explain things to her but this woman believes that her computer isn't connected to the internet unless she's signed into AOL. lol I've told her a hundred times that's not true but she can't wrap her mind around it. She still recalls the days of using dial up internet so she can't comprehend that the computer is always connected to the internet now. She accesses her bank accounts online and she does shop the internet occasionally. She uses it to research family history, check email, Facebook and prepare legal documents for people such as deeds, wills, etc. My only reason for a system restore was to hopefully change settings back and get rid of whatever (if anything) he installed. I was planning on scanning her system for malware and viruses before backing anything up. The guy warned her NOT to install internet security software. lol As for IP addresses, I don't know how to change that. I've told her to call the bank first thing in the morning. I've been telling her for weeks that I was going to install TeamViewer on her's and my dad's computers so that I could help maintain them. I haven't done it yet. When I set up my dad's new computer a year ago, I made him a user account. He's not the admin on his own computer. I have to install the Windows updates and do the maintenance because he's not allowed to install anything. He likes it that way as he's never used a computer before. And as well, if she's ever used this system for anything involving her credit card or other accounts, take steps there as well to protect her. Bummer for sure. About five years ago, I bought something online and the site got hacked. More than $5,000 was charged to my credit card. I was protected, but the next day, the credit card company called and asked if I was talking to them on another line - the dirtbag actually called them to complain about "his" credit card being discontinued. They still exist and can be recovered with several Undelete programs. However, if you wish to remove all data from the drive, just formatting is not enough. \"Zeroing\" a drive rewrites over the entire drive, replacing previous data with simple 0's. There are several 'Zero' filling programs available on the web and some drive manufacturers include a zero utility on their support sites. Answer The previous answer is pretty good, however it is argued that you can recover a zeroed hard drive. It is possible to retrieve \"some\" data however \"fully recovering\" a zeroed hard drive hasn't been done as far as i know. simply doing a \"1 zero pass\" will invert all the \"1's\" to \"0's\" (remember there are only 1's and 0's) hence \"zeroing\" however there is software available that can detect newly magnetized \"0's\" it simply re-inverts the \"0's\" to \"1's\" if you do a \"7 zero pass\" it's pretty much impossible to retrieve any information off the hard drive. look into the \"DoD 5220.22-m\" standard or \"gutmann\". hope this is useful.
