My mom (a person who should NEVER have access to a computer) received a call from a scammer today who told her he was from Microsoft and told her that her computer had been hacked.  He then proceeded to walk her though the process of giving him remote access to her computer.  <sigh>  I have no idea what he installed on her computer but I'm sure it was malicious. I don't even begin to know how to proceed with fixing it.  I had her unplug her ethernet cable even though she said the guy insisted that she keep the computer on and connected to the internet. The computer was connected for 8 hours after he called her. He also warned her not to install a new internet security software. lol  She wants to start backing up her files in preparation to wipe the computer clean.  She still has Windows XP and I'm not sure I even remember how that works.

I plan to scan her system, look at the logs to see what was done, and then maybe do a system restore. I have no idea what this guy may have installed or what settings he changed.  I believe he probably put a keylogger on and God only knows what else.

The guy called from this number:  214-329-9692.  I googled it and saw other stories identical to hers. Of course he had an Indian accent but an American name.  He said he was calling from New Jersey but this is a Texas number, not that it matters.  He was probably calling from India.   Ugh!  I hope he gets Crotch Rot!!!

if the scammer had remote access to the pc i would only back up must haves likt pictures and documents that she knows she needs. also thats a dallas area code. though there is a microsoft building here in dallas doubt it is from there. one thing you can start doing to remove is get a bandwidth scanning program to see what is using bandwidth. anything that is unknown should be shut down. start the computer in safe mode get a cd of malware bytes or kapersky. or simply save what you know to be clean and wipe the pc.

[ head in hands ]  my my my my myyyyyyy        If that dude had called me I would have trolled his pants off :) hahahaa. I have worked IT support and know exactly how to handle him lol.

If she did ANY amount of banking or shopping on that computer I would call her bank immediately to check on her account activity.

Personally I would just low-level format the drive and install the OS from scratch. A system restore isn't guaranteed to remove anything... it's just for reverting settings.

Any data that she wants to back up should also be scanned thoroughly before being put back onto her fresh machine.

I'm sick over this.  She actually believes that she didn't give the guy any information.  I tried to explain things to her but this woman believes that her computer isn't connected to the internet unless she's signed into AOL.  lol  I've told her a hundred times that's not true but she can't wrap her mind around it.  She still recalls the days of using dial up internet so she can't comprehend that the computer is always connected to the internet now.  She accesses her bank accounts online and she does shop the internet occasionally.  She uses it to research family history, check email, Facebook and prepare legal documents for people such as deeds, wills, etc.

My only reason for a system restore was to hopefully change settings back and get rid of whatever (if anything) he installed.  I was planning on scanning her system for malware and viruses before backing anything up.  The guy warned her NOT to install internet security software.  lol  As for IP addresses, I don't know how to change that.  I've told her to call the bank first thing in the morning.

I've been telling her for weeks that I was going to install TeamViewer on her's and my dad's computers so that I could help maintain them.  I haven't done it yet.  When I set up my dad's new computer a year ago, I made him a user account. He's not the admin on his own computer.  I have to install the Windows updates and do the maintenance because he's not allowed to install anything. :hrhr: He likes it that way as he's never used a computer before.

I hope the scammer guy gets every sexually transmitted disease on this planet and even some new ones that we don't know about!!!!   :realmad:  :realmad:  :realmad:  :realmad:

Can't we hope he just dies a painful death?.. wishing sex on someone (however bad the consequences).. isn't that bad.

Hit by a car? crushed by a piano?.. tripping into a pit of wet concrete and drowning? these are all better suggestions I think.

lmao.  I wasn't thinking of it that way.  I wasn't wishing sex on him.  I was wishing that his sexual organs developed such atrocities that mere rotting flesh would be a blessing.

I agree, also get credit protection going so she can check in and see or be notified of any BS going on

Good luck with all of it. Mercy got that call a couple weeks ago. I was so proud of her, she made him hang up on her, and then she called him back 4 or 5 times, giving him the same spill he tried to give her.

We live in SC and I got a letter recently as well.  People work hard, pay their bills and then get "rewarded" by low life scum bags that profit from it.  Makes me sick.

As others have advised, you need to wipe the drive - restore may not get it. And as well, if she's ever used this system for anything involving her credit card or other accounts, take steps there as well to protect her.

Bummer for sure. About five years ago, I bought something online and the site got hacked. More than $5,000 was charged to my credit card. I was protected, but the next day, the credit card company called and asked if I was talking to them on another line - the dirtbag actually called them to complain about "his" credit card being discontinued.

I have been obliged to maintain such financial and identity protection since Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs lost all my family's data including our bank account details.

They paid me no compensation but I can guess what would happen if I didn't pay my income tax... :realmad:

Misses Baldie fell for this just over a year ago...... My Solution remove HD and smash to bits with large hammer and take away her admin rights straight away (also banned her from ever going near my comp)

A bit extreme but I could not be bothered with formating and all the hassle it was cheaper to replace her HD and taught her an Important lesson there is only room in the Baldie household for one IDIOT and its not her....

My oldest living relative has one, she doesn't really know it's not a 'real computer' (like the last 3 she's had) and quite frankly I don't think she really cares.

I'm old enough to realize I don't want to have to deal with issues in my daily life that I can avoid, I'm sure that its about 2-3x on her side.  Everything is a balance of course.
