I've always been amazed by early watchmakers and their abilities. That was incredible. Great find thanks for showing us.

That was freaking amazing. The first programmable computer. It is amazing what people could do before facebook, candy crunch, internet porn, Pee Ditty and Jersey Shore.

I would challenge that no one on this earth today would be able to create such a thing. That would have taken years of watch making experience and thousands of dedicated hours to create such a thing.

Totally agree Bart. I think tyechnology by far has more of a negative effect on our long term goal of survival as a spices than any illness ever could. Just look at the Romans.. 5000 years and all that technology and still failed from within.

Never thought I would see real zombies before until I started seeing kids and adults with smart phones.

Johnny you need to remember this was back when math was an exact science. Everything they did as far as this kind of thing was done so with math. Not so unlike today. You see math is older than the human race! I am not a math mathematician, but I have worked as a machinist and a welder, as well as a carpenter. Fields which all depend on math to accomplish what they do. It is quite astonishing that a human actually figured it out. Yet humans have dreamed of doing things and inventing things beyond some of our imaginations today. There is an old proverb that talks about this.

Ecclesiastes 1:9

New International Version (NIV)

9 "What has been will be again,

    what has been done will be done again;

there is nothing new under the sun!" Interesting when you actually think about it huh?

great post belted !! never forget the early geniuses as we would be as nothing without their groundbreaking work and their courage to prove their beliefs were true and not some kind of witchery.

That's the most beautiful machine I've ever seen.

I wish I could go back and have a conversation with one of those clock makers. That would really make my day.

Great find Belted!

Like others have stated the craftsmanship that goes into making a masterpiece like this is astonishing to say the least. Every single piece was made from raw materials and finished by hand.

It is sad to see our future inventors, explorers and brilliant minds waste away focused on a TV, cell phone or video screen.

Consider that 75 - 200  years ago when so many important inventions were conceived and created young people spent more time investigating the world around them discovering how things work.

When so much curious brainpower not being used to develop new things our country is trouble.

So now the question to everyone who is raising a young person, "What can you do to provide an atmosphere that makes a young person want to learn more about everything"?

I can assure you that the creator of this incredible work of art Pierre Jaquet-Droz,  had many interests and skills only obtained thru exploring everything.

The ranch I work at is over 100 years old and sometimes I find myself in the barn or basement looking at devices and "thingamajigs" that were created to make some task easier and I am amazed.

An example would be a Hay Baler  .  . . .omg all the parts and precision needed to bale up straw or grass would blow you away (well some of you . . .har !)

It has been said  that "Necessity breeds invention"  (needing something forces creativity) If kids feel like they don't need anything then there is no reason create anything.

truly, and I mean truly AMAZING! The time involved to make such a creation of this sort is almost unbelievable, I am so glad that this genius made it when he did!.  I doubt anyone of today could do this mechanically any better than he!

It's because science is being controlled by consumerism and industrialism... not creativity.

Let's not forget about Da Vinci's Mechanical Lion:

Or the amazing mechanical inventions of Heron of Alexandria:

There's also an illusion in magician circles called The Turk:

Of course, there are people that claim there's a small person inside the cabinet playing the game using mirrors or something. I'm betting it's more like a player piano mechanism inside and the moves are rehearsed over and over with a plant in the audience. Still, it's an awesome piece of machinery.
