I think I may update my current PC to the technical preview.. worth a look :)

Other than that I plan on upgrading all the computers I have to Windows 10. From what I have seen they have done a very good job.

duc

i have decided to cancel my free upgrade....its only good for 1 yr then after that u have to buy it ....think they probably goin cause big hassle to uninstall back to win 7 so ppl will buy 10 ...besides from what i just read its big hassle now ....my anti virus wont work on it if u want to play dvd s on win 10 u have to install special software to do so and few other things im not likn about the change so for now im stickin with win 7 til i have no choice but to upgrade.....read this article...and no i do not believe bootlegs or un official copies of win 7 will be able to upgrade for free from what i am understanding .....http://www.theverge.com/2015/6/1/8696949/windows-10-feature-loss

Don't panic everyone, duc is correct in what he said in a previous post, this offer is on for a year, imagine that will be a year from it's release on July 29th i think, so nobody has to download and install it straight away, we can all wait awhile and see how it develops.

You should have read Duc's earlier post, you are confused with the "it's only good for 1 year" the free offer is on for 1 year, you can wait 11 months and 6 days before you decide to take up this offer but if you don't take the offer up after 1 year starting from July 29th then yes after that anyone who has not subscribed/ordered the "free" version will then have to pay for it, i suggest you try to re-order it because even if you have the "free" upgrade it does not mean you have to run it.

This is the link from Duc's earlier post, everyone should read this.

just seen their site

Windows 10 is coming July 29, 2015.

The free upgrade applies only to Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1. So if you haven't upgraded Windows 7 to SP1 or Windows 8 to 8.1, you'll have to perform those tasks first. Also, you have one year from July 29 to upgrade your PC to Windows 10 for free. After that year is up, you'll presumably have to purchase Windows 10 yourself.

I wouldn't take what anyone says on these forums as pure fact not news websites, hell, not even my own posts. Look for yourself on the Microsoft website for the true story. The offer is good for one year, once done you have it for as long as they support it. Anti-viruses will be one of the programs that require updating to work as they use OS functionality for scanning, they will of course have to update whereas most programs will run fine. Do you actually use media player? I have always used VLC for DVDs - I wouldn't call that 'special' software.

The news article cites: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-specifications as its source which says things slightly differently

its microsoft if u believe that for real u ll pay for that.....microsoft always leaves loop holes for ppl to figure out a backdoor to ...why they always coming out with updates on reg basis....just saying

They don't do it purposefully and that is the case for all operating systems, I apply similar updates to the Linux systems I run as well as to the Windows systems.

@nisty hey maybe i was wrong i did some digging found few articles that said u can upgrade to win 10 even if ur copy of win7 is not legit...apparently they doin this so u will eventually have to buy 10 to be legitimate windows 10 owner tho....here article i found for u .....

There was rumour that they would allow free upgrades to those using bootleg versions but as it is not mentioned anywhere on their website I would say those rumours have been falsified.

Duck just wondering what you mean about them forcing Bing?      We'll still have the option to chose search providers right?

What I mean is they are aggressive with it's use you can go to Google or use another search engine but for stuff like the search in the task bar it seems to use Bing and I am not sure on how to change it yet. See screenshot.

Got both my copies reserved, for now.  But that was my understanding duc when I read the article.  That if you upgrade in the first 12 months from July (whatever) it is free until July 28/16 and you have it until the new OS comes out.  Either way I'll try it and see.  Also it gives me an excuse for my wife to go buy 2 new 2 TB HD.  Back up purpouses of course.

For those concerned over game compatibility I can confirm that Call of Duty 4 runs great. No issues with install or Punkbuster.

If you reserve it, It doesn't install to your system automatically...It loads to your downloads folder...You have to run the exe. file for it to load to your system...so if you decide in the meantime you don't want it you can just delete it from the download folder...

@ chavez: When I load the game, every button doesn't work with my mouse. If it's like I was on the windows deskop with cod in background...

Hmm try checking your DX version and maybe installing using https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

I had one issue with DyingLight where DX12 may have been causing issues and using that download it worked.

Logged on this morning and got this message from Microsoft saying i could reserve a free "full" upgrade for Windows 10 when it is released, anyone else get this, it's not usually like them to give stuff away for free?

Its a technical preview not the real one :P
When it comes out though I recommend people so switch overits going to be the last windows version for a few years (Microsoft said the last but I'm sure that in ten years they will launch a new one) You will upgrade eventually why not do it at release?

so if you upgrade do you have to install all your games over again so they will run on 10?
