My computer came with McAfee software which is expiring very shortly. What is the best free software out there for antivirus?

Thanks

Yes, it is very good........can't believe that it is actually from Microsoft.  It has gotten great reviews and I have replaced AVG and other programs with it.  I would recommend it.

However, always keep things like Malware Bytes and SpyBot handy for periodic scans.  I also like Super Anti-SpyWare.

I switched from AVG, tried Panda Cloud Antivirus, and now I use Microsoft Security Essentials which doesn't seem to be too bad considering is Microsoft and it's free and I also use Malware Bytes which I find to be a trusty tool.

Norton Mes Up Your System/ Antivirus? No way!

Microsoft/Malware combo with a dose of  Spybot and run thru a router.

I also use Firefox with WOT (web of trust) add-on. Also No-Script add-on.

You still have to watch loading a virus thru USB or a previously burnt disk.

Maximum PC magazine rates ESET (?) as best anti-virus PERIOD.

are you kidding  me? thats your thought process? omg that maakes no ssense at all! the ones that charge for protection want you to keep coming back and keep buying something you dont need to pay for! that makes more sense if we're talking from the hip! the fact of the matter is the free ones are offered for other rasons than making money off your misfortunes!  i have bought the pay for ones and was not even close to being as satisfied as i am with the freebys!

No firewall and no AV cover is asking for trouble.  Guess some folks haven't heard of botnets and drive-by infections...

Heck, there are even back doors into OS X these days!

I have long rated AVG's free offering but it doesn't include some features of the paid-for product.

Both Norton and McAfee products have caused me real headaches.  Symantec had to send me three A4 pages of instructions to remove their product from my system once and that isn't the mark of a great program!  My first job when I buy a machine with Norton or McAfee stuff on it is to remove it!
