Even back in the late 70s and early 80s TV he was able to get in some zingers that the censors didnt catch. Such as talking about small ravenous animals on the planet Orc that liked to eat hair. You had to be careful not to let them get into your shorts.

His ability to perform - his brilliance - knew no limits but as well, he was a fine and decent man. Let's hope his passing will bring renewed attention to the struggles faced every day by those suffering clinical depression and that lives may be saved.

Very well said Harry......Depression can be a very silent killer and you die from the inside out.....Its destroys you mentally 1st then physically 2nd and the only option most are left with is death by there own means...

If Robin Williams was a kid growing up today, he would have probably been hated by his teachers as a shit disturber, placed in a special education program, and forced to go on ADHD meds to quiet him down.  Kind of makes you wonder how many talented kids are told something is wrong with them and they never completely reach their full potential.

 

To anybody who grew up in Marin county like I did, Robin was a regular fixture and was seen all of the time out an about just like a normal person at local restaurants, grocery stores, or out for a ride on his mountain bike.  He lived (and died) in a well to do neighborhood on the water in San Francisco bay just a couple doors down from my uncle who knew him well as a neighbor.  It's not a gated community and anybody could literally go up and knock on his door. If he was home, he would answer the door.  A few years ago when my kids were younger, we took them trick or treating in the neighborhood where he lived, and he answered the door and handed out glow sticks and candy.

 

When I was 19 my girl friend at the time was a lifeguard at a pool in the condo complex where Robin's mom lived. We were there swimming one day and Robin came out with his mom for a dip in the pool, dove into the pool not realizing it was only 3 feet deep, and scraped the skin off of his nose when it hit the bottom of the pool. He was gushing blood as my girlfriend tended to him, and he still cracked jokes the entire time.  Other times when I saw him, he looked sad and withdrawn. When he was away from the cameras you could see that he had a troubled soul, it was just a look on his face and in his eyes.  I can't imagine living life where you have to constantly be funny and the toll it has to take on your mental health.

 

Great talent comes at a cost, and Robin paid that price.  He was a salt of the earth kind of person and treated everybody (even strangers) with respect and dignity and didn't let his fame change who he was.  His mentor Jonathan Winters also had his demons, and voluntarily committed himself to a psychiatric hospital, only to find out years later that he had what we call today bi-polar disorder. Robin may have suffered from similar disorders, but for most of his life he managed it as best he could, and left us all with some wonderful memories.

Sad to see the news. I do find it ironic that the person who gave laughs and great times (to many people when they needed it the most) succumb to the same difficulties. I feel like he took a bullet for many of us. I know I have followed him and watched his performances when I was feeling low and he would cheer me up.

 

Thank you Mr. Williams for all the good that you did in your life. You have touched the lives of many in your spectacular career and life. I hope you rest in peace and may you feel as much joy in your afterlife as you have spread in your life. You will be missed....

Our local sheriff's department just held a press conference and said that Robin was found fully clothed in a seated position hanging with a belt from a closed closet door, and he also tried to cut his wrists with a pocket knife found nearby. By the time he was found at around 10:AM Monday morning he had already been dead several hours and was last seen alive at 10:PM on Sunday evening. 

 

He really must have wanted to die considering all he had to do was to stand up.  What a horrible end for such a great talent.

You know the part I came to understand is for the most part people with there own demons tend to try to make life more funny or be more giving and in general tending to other peoples needs or desires....

 

They find comfort in themselves by comforting other....

 

Like you said in real life he looked sad and he hid that for whatever personal reason or cause...But in the spot light he wore a smile 

 

 

This is what makes this so sad....People can be found any where around you feeling the same way he did some just do a great job at concealing it 

and we never know to help

I have tried to kill myself 7 times and apparently I suck at it because I am still here. But I got the scars on my wrist to prove I will try again. 

 

Depression is a very scary place. Thank God I don't suffer from it anymore since 2009.

 

Robin Williams was dyslexic.... That's why he was so fucking smart.

I watched an interview of Williams earlier today and he was talking about watching TV with his dad in his early teens. He said that his dad rarely laughed at anything and then Jonathan Winters came on TV and his dad started laughing out out. That's where he got his inspiration to be a comedian and love of Winters.
