All of you that think you are somehow "safe" on windows 7, I hope you realize MS is slowly integrating all the same things into 7 that scare you so much in 10.

No.  Support for Win7, other than security updates, ended over a year ago.  No feature development or phone support.

If I knew where to link the article I read I would, but it was in 2015 and I forget where I read this on the MS site after the Win 10 upgrade campaign started . Those Security updates include what MS deems to be security fixes to keep the OS inline with the win 10 update process. Some updates will be forced unless you have disabled the win 7 update module completely and illusions of privacy will be just that.

Abstinence is the best protection. Best to stay off the internet and never plug anything into any of your computer sockets.

I have to say that I do disagree with @@djMot on his first post, especially as it is hugely more complex than the article that is linked to suggests. I also disagree with @@hxtr on his views on Microsoft and updating in general. But the question of 'who is right?' and who in general to believe? well that's not such a simple answer.

I am not going to pretend that I have the credentials to give proper advice on this but in my humble opinion you are all trying to fit a single solution into something that requires a multitude of options. The evolution of both operating systems, application software and hardware has been because of the wide variety of PC users and how they are using them. The same goes for antivirus solutions. If I am doing lots of browsing of random websites and downloading from them then  I want an AV that is doing full behavioural scanning which is a bit more resource intensive. Or if all I do is play a couple of games, visit a few websites and do some email then Defender would be OK for me.

That's what Edward Snowden told the world back in 2011 i think, the NSA can track every cell phone in the world and can also listen in to you through a house phone with the receiver down, apparently they are only thinking of our safety.....yeah right.

Like you, @Sitting- duc, I browse to lots of places on the Internet.  I only use Defender because there is no one more qualified to protect the operating system than the operating system author itself.  The article I posted a link to further links out to other articles which, in total, illustrates the frustration browser authors experience at the hand of AV vendors that step in and disable the protection mechanisms they have baked into their browsers.  This increases the attack surface available to cybercriminals.

With headlines like "Symantec calls antivirus 'doomed' as security giants fight for survival," and Google browser engineers tweeting out "You misunderstand your own ignorance. AV is my single biggest impediment to shipping a secure browser," I'm inclined to stop throwing good money after bad.

YMMV.  Everyone is always free to spend whatever they like on AV.  As always, your money, your choice.

I play games, do a bit of surfing, pay bills, buy shit, and email. Using only defender and Malwarebytes. That's all I personally feel I need. Everyone will feel differently and have their own opinion of what the believe they need for what they are doing on their respective pcs.

That said, i also believe there is no one piece of software that will do it all so when is enough? The answer... Most likely not the same from mine, mot's, or hxtr's, or anyone elses.

But feel free to continue the saga. There is a lot of good info and insight here to maybe help the uninformed.

Yeah that's fair, I work in a very security conscious organisation and our security standards are made by the people that snoop on the UK population. As such I feel that their advice is probably whats best for me to keep my computer safe.

Watch the movie "Snowden". NO ONE IS SECURE. And anyone one who thinks they are is delusional.

It is up to you to be smart. How you use your computer. What browers addones and other. But to think anyone is secure... fat chance. If someone wants in.. they will get in. Period.

What do security updates do for me when I dont use IE? I use Chrome. Again it is up to me to keep my PC clean. My habits dictate how my PC runs.

@@hxtr

You are completely right that nobody is secure - however you are saying it in a 'hyped' way which propagates the information in a 'fake news' kind of style.

I have been on a couple of weeks of security training recently, the courses focused on securing application development and the application environments. The big thing that came out was that yes nobody or system is secure. HOWEVER you need to know your adversary and decide who you want to defend against. Of course we can say nobody is secure.. because with enough money you can get into any system (look at the San Bernardino iPhone cracking case).

Troy Hunt does some very interesting security courses that are publicly available and give you a great overview of the conditions out there and he also discusses the information from Snowden and the wider security community. The key adversaries that you will come across are 'Nation States', 'Cyber-Criminals' and 'Hacktivists' - you can also have the 'Malicious Insiders' category.

If a nation state wants to get in to your system it will undoubtedly be able to do that - but you have to question why they would want your midget porn. Cyber Criminals are really the only target for a standard type of user (such as the ones on this website) and Hacktivists only really go after companies and organisations. The Cyber Criminal category prefers entry into systems through social engineering, viruses and malware and although they can have huge amounts of funds they are using them for mass distribution.

On the topic of antiviruses which is how this topic was started - they are generally protecting against the cyber criminal category as that is what the average user is doing. To protect against the nation state you require your own nation state to be doing the protecting - again not 100% protected but the cost of entry goes up.

So in summary - yes @@hxtr you are right that you can never have a fully secure system but you can of course have levels. What you are saying is true but you are taking information out of context. I'm not sure why you are? perhaps to scare people? cause trouble? I don't get it..

Personally I have already signed my declaration to my government that they can have all of my data and access any of my systems. But you know.. I'm an idiot.

It depends on where you live. Many places and governments WOULD care whether or not you have midget porn. Or what websites you go to. Or people that you talk to. They dont want your midget porn. They do want to use it against you. People tend to think money. Or exposing people. But nation states think secrets. And of course it assumes places like MS have perfect security. Or cheating websites.

For my personal system on the updates. :)

Can't turn off updates in 10 unless I guess you have the pro version and do a policy change. Why not just turn them off? Because Microsoft wants you always connected. How else can they market or sell your information for marketing towards you unless you're always connected?

I trust no company. Not even one. Should we trust them?

Before I post this I am trying to think is their even one company I trust..... nope. I done trust even one company except maybe local non chain restaurants. I have to trust you to eat your food. Though I have eaten at McDonalds before and I knew they were poison.

Better to actually watch the real Ed Snowden story in the Documentary "CitizenFour" and @@Sitting-Duc yes i understand what you had to do for your job in signing a declaration but at the end of the day it don't matter because they can see everything you are doing anyway...watch this, i think he probably signed similar stuff to you and as for Hxtr trying to scare people and cause trouble, no, he is just telling you how it is and yes you should be scared but i think we are taking a different course now from where this post started lol.
