My Garlic harvest has been a great success. If you are wondering what the heck I’m doing growing so much food? I just enjoy gardening! I love sharing with family, friends, neighbours and anyone who visits. I particularly love sharing with people needing a little help. Some days I make up little packages and deliver them to my senior relatives. It’s always nice to help out the local soup kitchens. Nothing goes to waist. I love canning string beans, tomatoes and things. My onions and potatoes last 4-6 months, the garlic lasted from August last year until June this year….we ran out I gave too much away lol. Enjoy the pictures, share your photos of anything you’ve grown. Big or small we’ll love them all. jointz, ShadyBrady, AthenA and 14 others 17 Awards

I grow the Hard neck variety called Music. Hard neck have fewer but larger cloves per bulb. They(Hard neck) have a woody stock in the centre. They are more hardy in colder, northern areas and tend to last longer. Depending on location and severity of winter HN are planted in the fall 2-3 weeks before the ground freeze’s. This allows the garlic clove to set roots. HN garlic must go through a cold dormant spell before sprouting in the very early spring. HN garlic can withstand diverse soil types but really loves a soil with a lot of organic matter. Most garlic plantings benefit from a thick layer of mulch when planted. The mulch alleviates multiple freeze thaw cycles which will damage the new developing roots. I live 2 miles from the coast and experience several drastic freeze thaw cycles most winters. Therefore I use a very thick mulch, I even have to hold the mulch down with weighted wire fence material or it will blow away. HN garlic produce a flower step called a scape. The scapes should be removed allowing the garlic to concentrate on bulb development rather than flowering. The flower turns to a thing called bulbils. Bulbils can be planted but it would take 2-3 years to propagate bulbs of an size. Garlic must be dried out of the sun with good air circulation for 2-3 weeks. This allows the nutrition from the leaves to be drawn into the cloves. Once dried the roots and stocks should be cut off the dirt can be rubbed off not washed as water will promote rot. One of the thin skins should be removed allowing for a very clean pristine garlic bulb. Here are a couple of pictures from last year’s crop after being cleaned up. Yes I have a big deer problem! I use 2 different electric fences. In the garden picture you can see the white electrified tape. this has 2 sets of fencing about 3 feet apart. the outer fence has 1 ribbon about 3 feet high the inner fence has 2 ribbons at 18 inches and 4 feet. the deer can jump it but the 3 dimensional look of it confuses them so they approach the fence with caution and put their nose on he outer fence and take a hit some folks put aluminum foil on the outer fence and smear it peanut butter or apple flavor to attract the deer then get shocked. my other garden has a 6 foot high single fence. The deer can jump this too but I stagger the steel, ribbon and nylon twine with the ribbon at about 3 feet high. Again this white electrified ribbon is a visual queue to the deer making them approach it and touch it with their nose. So far I have been very lucky and all the deer have stayed away from the gardens for 3 years. The E fence controllers put out 3-10,000 volts! One is both battery or 120 volts the other is just 120 volts Smeggie, rexbowan, RobMc and 2 others 5 Awards

Very nice! Here in eastern Canada I'm in zone 5b only because I'm near the coast the farther inland the zones change to 5A and 5. I plant the first week of June and the garden is finished September October. I start my onions in March, tomatoes and peppers in April, squash, cucumbers, cantaloupe and watermelon in May. This year I started some of my corn in May. I will have 3 staggered harvest dates. First time experiment. Edited August 2, 2022 by WeednFeed SparksHunter, jointz, RobMc and 1 other 4 Awards

I "rented" (He's getting a bunch of potatoes I planted plenty) a 10'x20' spot in the neighbors garden because he wasn't gong to plant anything in that part this year. He has room for quite a few fall/winter Cauliflower. It's in his upper 10'x40' garden. He has 4 4x8 raised beds down near his house. He pickles the Cauliflower with the peppers he grows. I like Cauliflower broiled with home made cheese sauce. OMG he tried to get me to eat one of his "Sweet Banana Peppers" a couple days ago. He and my other neighbor took 1 bite and ran straight to the house to grab the Milk. He said Holy FUCK that's Definitely not Sweet Banana Peppers. I smelled one and it about burnt my nose hairs out.
