It'll be sometime this summer. We still have to schedule the sea trial, then the survey. Assuming all goes well and there are no significant issues, then we will put it on land and have the bottom paint done and get her buffed out between April 29 - May 13. We'll want some time behind the wheel and get used to it before we decide to bring people on board. YACCster 1 Awards

A few things were found, some somewhat significant, some minor. The things we found of concern; 1). Starboard engine is leaking water on both exhaust manifolds where the spacer to the riser meets. Could just need a gasket, but who knows. With water leaking out, it's likely leaking into the engine. Customer will have to fix this (whether its as simple as gaskets or entire engine) before I would accept the deal. 2). The starboard deck hatch on top of the front has some moisture and delamination in the fiberglass. Has to be fixed on the sellers dime. 3). The port propeller has a couple of nice dings in it. Its causing a slight vibration underway, but a prop recondition will take care of that. 4). The generator is in need of a capacitor as it's not putting out enough voltage. That will be fixed this week by the seller. The surveyor was really impressed with the condition of this boat. Other than the delamination near the one hatch on the deck, he said this thing is a tank and in amazing shape for 23 years old. So we will see how the seller responds to the starboard engine issues and the hatch delamination. He either fixes them or we walk away from it. https://rumble.com/v2iqft4-2000-sea-ray-410-express-cruiser-dropping-in-for-sea-trial.html YACCster, RobMc and TBB 2 1 Awards

I can't picture what you mean about stbd engine leaking on both manifolds?? and possibly getting back into the engine. BIG RED FLAG, as boats stand for ages any ingress of water into the engines can cause catastrophic and expensive damage (rust), you need the engine internals examined (borescope minimum) surveyor should have known this fact well. 2/. ANY signs of osmosis in a fibreglass vessel should warrant further investigations, did he crawl through internally and test??? another Red Flag, if it's in one part it may be starting in others, repair costs are horrendous 3/. Sounds right but carefully examine any stern seals, they are degraded with vibration, is she Z drive? 4/. OK Don't want to scare you, just want you to get good value buddy Edited April 17, 2023 by RobMc

Sounds right but carefully examine any stern seals, they are degraded with vibration, is she Z drive? 4/. OK Don't want to scare you, just want you to get good value buddy The surveyor does a resonance sound test on the entire hull, top to bottom. He also puts a moisture meter all over the hull to check for moisture in the core of the hull. Leakage around hatches is very common. They repair it by pulling the hatch out, drilling holes in the affected areas. They use heaters to dry out the fibreglass and inject resin into the core where the delamination has occurred. Once that is set and solid (and it is much stronger than the original wood core) they seal it all up, reset the hatch and call it a day. It will last the lifetime of the boat. The engines are 7.4L 454 cubic inch V-8 gasoline engines. Hence there are two exhaust manifolds per engine (one on each side). The surveyor uses a thermal imaging camera on the engine, manifolds, heat exchangers to ensure that things are properly cooling and there are no signs of cracks. The water leaks were found during a visual inspection. They connect OBD diags to the engines and check compression. Other than that no surveyor will go much further than that other than to take oil samples from the engines, transmissions and the generator. They will be sent out to labs for analysis to see what contaminants are in the oil (i.e. coolant, water, particulate, etc). These engines are direct drive shaft engines as opposed to V-drives, Z-drives or stern drives. None of this scares me. It's all fixable. Just not on my dime. RobMc 1 Awards

Oil samples are good though and should show any problems in engines, but personally I would have borescoped before starting any engine if I suspected water damage. Thermal imaging is good (especially for electrics on larger vessels) and should show defective combustion, direct drive would be my preferred choice too, but watch those seals. Resonance testing is a good quick check, but in my humble opinion does not supercede the MK 1 eyeball and a thorough crawl around.

Well we weren't aware of any water issues with the engine until after we had been underway on our sea trial. Virtually every nook and cranny (short of drilling holes) was explored on this vessel. Every stringer within the bilge and sumps were resonance checked and moisture tested. The thermal imaging camera was also used on the inside and outside of the hull to check for temperature inconsistencies which would have identified any voids in the hull core. He knows his shit OK but with all petrol engines and diesels (when able) on boats (or anything else) if it has been standing for a long time it is prudent to spin the engines over with plugs out or cocks open (diesel). Then if you see any water coming out you know you have problems, if you don't you may have bigger problems, holed pistons one of them). I would take out plugs, examine with borescope, if ok turn over, put plugs back or close cocks then start, expect white smoke at first as moisture will be there. However if engines warmed up and white smoke still there further investigation is required. I have seen many owners leave their boats for over 6 months, rock up, start the engines then examine their bank accounts to cover the result of not doing 30 minutes work. Smeggie 1
