Thing is, this is nothing new; faaar from it; Russia has been waging a campaign of aggression, oppression & ethnic cleansing against Ukraine for about 1,000 years. Invading a country & occupying it are two different things; Putin's popularity will quickly plummet as guerilla warfare will start sending Russian sons home to their mothers. And all Russia is nowadays is basically a gas station; if he can't sell it, the economy further plummets. 2/3 of its exports are petroleum related. Most he seems to be aiming for is a door-in-the-face ploy; where he threatens the capitol & then offers to withdraw to the Donbas....or so it would seem.

As far as I know I dont think the US gets oil from Russia and I know for a fact that the US doesnt import natural gas from Russia as we have an abundance of it here.

Strictly speaking with all the arms the western nations has been sending Ukraine the past year, and more are on the way, it was a big gamble on Putins part that it wont turn into a protracted mess for him. Thus far it is seems that over time it is a gamble he is going to lose.
