Long story short i wallowed in alot of self pity last couple of weeks over the realization that im 26 and im not happy of where i am career wise in life. I live in a 1 br apartment with a wife and child, we have to move because its just way too small. Now reality hit me that me being a janitor is nothing be proud of paid the bills... until now. I went into a pretty depressed state because i didnt feel like i could provide what my family needed. I also felt that when my son grows up he wouldnt be proud of his father because he cleans piss and shit toilets for a living. So after crying (literally) and punching my quarter panel of my truck a few times my wifes gentle and calming words rang thru the air. She calmed me down and re assured me that even though im only a janitor im still hungry enough to do something i love and go to school for. So we are taking our taxes we got, getting a barely decent 2 bedroom apartment and the rest is being invested into me going to school to get IT Certifications..... Saturday we go to meet with the guidance counselor to get me set up for summer classes and certifications. My wife got me fired up about it and im excited to start a new chapter in life. Also for anyone who isnt asleep because of the story I may ask... any IT guys/gals here have any kind of tips or tricks in the field for getting started ? I have a Internship i am going to do thru my job at the school i clean and i plan on going to Networking but not entirely sure. Any help or advice is always appreciated !

It's never too late to make a change. Good for you! Networking is where it's at. People with networking skills and certifications are in demand. Cisco's certifications are recognized everywhere; My $.02: start with a CCNA then pick your stream from the various branches from there.

Good luck!

Awesome! I am sure you will always be able to find a job in IT! Good move. BTW - there is nothing to be ashamed of by being a janitor. You are providing for your family which more than the deadbeat dads in the world do.  Good Luck!

Brother I know where you're coming from... I'm 33 and working part time at a private gated community. I'm taking a test next week to be a 911 Dispatcher... but my heart wants to be a cop. I went to the academy in 2009 and failed my run... so I got depressed and gained weight... 100+ lbs of it!! I have a wife and 6 kids and wondering what I'm doing with my life!! I've been pissed off at myself for far too long! So once I finally get into a job with a set schedule... it's time to hit the gym hardcore!! I want to be a cop.. it's all I've ever wanted to be in life!!

Go for your goals and let nothing stop you!!

As in all things, the answer is "it depends". Start here: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/training-events/training-certifications/overview.html and I'd suggest asking at your school or even with local IT and large companies what track or skills are most in demand and forecast to be in demand over the coming years. Network security will always be hot, but so will most other areas too.  Routing and switching is the bedrock of networking and is a marketable track.

It sounds like you have a great gal by your side, I started out sweeping the parking lot of a restaurant. With a lot of hard work, and school, i now work on Helicopters all over the world.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, nothing worth while comes easy, so get in there and fight for it Bro!!!

Good luck, and stick with it!!!

You got this brother, the right frame of mind is all you need. 25 years ago I was in and out of jail, addicted to crack and cocaine. A total fuck up in life. took a turn at 20, got my shit together, got married, have kids who are aware of my past, I hide nothing from them, they know where I came from and where I have been and the life I had before them. I have not seen a cop in 20 years, have not touched anything harder than weed in the drug department, lost 140+ lbs in last year and a bit, been in same job for 20 years this March. Started on the floor sweeping plastic and now work in the lab, all with a grade 10 education. Basically I am saying bro, you can be at rock bottom and there is ALWAYS a way to the top. And dont worry about your kids looking up to you, you are Dad, they are gonna do that no matter what, my kids do and they know all the shit I did, its what you do with your time with them that counts not what you did before. Even if you do stay a Janitor, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, there can be money to be made there, starting your own cleaning buisness. Everything is there at your fingertips bro, grab it and run with it!

Spot on. I would suggest Cisco certifications as well. Set your goal to get CCNA +Security or +Voice. Both are in high demand and you WILL be able to get a job. Any CCNA will get you on the path to a great career. The first Cisco cert on the path is CCENT and it is the same no matter which path you ultimately choose.

You can do it brother! You are a young intelligent man and once you get going you will be surprised how quickly things will turn around for you. Be proud of yourself for realizing that you desire to make a positive change and keep that wonderful woman you have close. She sounds like a great wife and that is something that you probably don't give yourself enough credit for. Look at her love for you and the child you have together and realize that speaks volumes about you. You should also know that what you do or how much money or prestige you have won't change anything about how your son sees you. Keep being a loving father and your boy will grow up knowing he has the best Daddy in the world.

Sorry for rambling on but you are the same age as my son and your story reminds me of his only he is probably a couple of years ahead of you. He had his son when he was 20 and then came to the same place you are at two years ago and now he is on a solid career path. They just got a great place to live and I went with him three weeks ago and helped him buy his first ever new car. He was so proud it brought tears to my eyes.

Best of luck friend. Everything always seems hard in the beginning. It takes will power and mind set to achieve your goals and you are already in the first step. You can do eet. My ex husband is a network administrator on a naval base and he started out doing small it jobs. Mostly at small firms and picking up contract work. Sometimes you have to start small to get big. Maybe even knowing someone might help. I'm not exactly sure where you live but bigger towns are good start.

Awesome...forward movement is always the right direction.

But speaking about piss and shit, I am in all lines of plumbing and HVAC. You know all them IT guys need to shit and piss right? Well, I've raised a family, got 2 boats, go on nice vacations, money in the bank and fat steaks every Friday!!

Don't write off piss and shit...I charge by the hour, one hour minimum and half hour increments....some days I can charge 10 hrs on and 8 hour day.

You need to remember 3 things to be a good plumber.

1. water flows down (pitch is important)

2. Payday is Friday

3. Don't chew your finger nails...

Good luck in all your future endeavors...the world needs plumbers.

The first thing you need to learn is networking...how it works, what it needs to work, etc. IP addressing and protocols. I've been a computer field engineer for over 35 years now, so I know. IM me and I'll help. TS would be better, just coordinate with me and we'll talk.
