Everyone has got this message:

557820326661b_04ltyy.jpg

The xfire homepage states xfire is "The ultimate tournament platform". I guess they're are just dropping the social stuff - that is the chat, screenshots, videos and gametime tracking and stuff.

Maybe it's time that we should start looking at a new system to communicate with. I know we have Steam and Origin but we really need something that is quicker than the website but all admins and all game types could use. I know we don't need to change right now but this has shown that Xfire is downgrading and therefore there is more of a risk that they will cut it off all together.

One thought I did have was that we could setup a IRC server for XI, that way we could have a chat system that all members could connect to, we could have it on both the website and people have the option of downloading. Never set one up though - just an idea.

Anyone else have any ideas?

When you say chat do you mean like Teamspeak or will it have the facility to type chat too, not everyone feels like talking all the time?

Other alternative is Raptor or Skype, even though Raptor uses support through XFire.

True, but you can chat in there too.

Btw, you can still access the website by http://208.88.178.38/profile/modest71/

Yes but being in a group chat with 300 members is going to be a mess :P We can better use the website in that case and add a chatbox function

We could try this:  https://www.evolvehq.com/welcome

"Works very well, and do virtually anything xfire did too, but better and more extensive.".

Someone suggested that to me.

This looks interesting.  Could be our alternative to consider if xfire goes offline or sooner before that happens.

Have to agree. Skype not useless but don't think is a good alternative for xfire replacement.

Irc might work. Personally I use the forums and pm's. Pm's go to my real email and I see them almost immediately.

i only know skype and IRC, we had that once (years ago) in another clan, works for chat, sharing files etc.

skype works for chat, too (typing), with groups and single persons, so w/e....

although i have to admit, my internet connection sucks and i wont be able to use it while in game (probably) ....lol :smiling:

plus.... i still dont believe that xfire is shutting down within such a short time, must be a hack or joke :ermm:

Yeah chat as in typing :)

In my eyes communication wise we currently have:

  • Forums for many user communication and in depth discussion.
  • Teamspeak for voice communication

Which reduces the requirements of the replacement to Xfire. We had already dropped Xfire as a requirement for membership and has made it that members needed to have either Xfire, Steam or Origin and the admins added to them.

The key points we used Xfire for that the replacement needs to have are:

  • Ability to contact online admins, this means non-members will require access
  • Group chat between admins or certain parties
  • One to one chat between people

One of the big uses was videos for banning people which I would now like to remove all together and instead solely use the demo system. This would mean creating an alternate system for admins that facilitated this.

I think we need something that everyone should use regardless of the games they play and therefore think we should go with something that is dedicated to chat rather than games. I also think we need something that can be installed optionally and if someone doesn't want to install it they could use it in a browser or the like.

It's a tricky thing to replace here and as I have said to the seniors I do not want us to rush to a replacement but discuss where to go.

Well, my team and I have never used x-fire :)    It's bloat-ware as far as I'm concerned.

The built in record function is ok, but it is not a versatile format.

Raptr is pretty good for chat, social and video recording....although, I am struggling to get the video recording to work with COD4 at the moment.

In this day and age, everyone gets their emails immediately, or within minutes depending on their smartphones sync rate, so a chat system outside of the PM and Forum system we have in place on the website is extraneous. We may as well just use whatsapp!

For the admins we are losing an important tool to record video of potential hackers.  We're going to need some kind of alternative.

How about Raptr http://raptr.com/ ? Works with a host of games, and very stable.

Youtube I suppose. But for this kind of thing, since its important, such videos should probably be available as normal downloads to watch on vlc and scrub through it. Easy enough to upload them here I figure and only give admin privileges. Also no need to worry about codecs or youtube screwing with video quality.

Just tried evolve for game recording and it didn't affect my fps enough to worry. Set to high quality, 30 seconds (ish) was around 200MB.

Test video will be here once uploaded (9 minutes apparently).
