In late 1996, my wife surprised me by coming home from the local dog shelter with a beautiful 2 year old yellow lab. His name was Ozzy, and the previous owners kept him locked up in a back yard and were upset that he knocked over their toddler.  My wife fell in love with him the moment she laid eyes on him, and so did I.

It was immediately obvious to us that Ozzy was great with kids, and even when our (then) young kids crawled all over him, he didn't mind a bit.

Ozzy and I bonded quickly, and he rarely let me out of his sight.

In the 15+ years that he was part of our family, he always went on vacations with us and was never left alone for more than an hour or two.

Until a few days ago even at his advanced age, he was healthy, happy and very active.

Today at 5:35PM PDT, our 4th child Ozzy finally left this world for the big room full of tennis balls in the sky. We lost a member of our family today and feel like our hearts have been ripped out. But we have 15+ years of memories and thousands of family photos to remember him by.

Goodbye old friend. I hope you are at peace and there to greet all of us who loved you when our time comes.

Sorry for your loss LOM.  I always tell my friends to cherish and document all your cherished memories, as nothing and no-one is forever.  Hope you find a good dog to fill the void, even though you can never replace him.

Always sad to lose a loved one..

I have grieved deeply for every dog I have had in my many years, each still has a place in my heart going back to childhood.

Think about another rescue, especially a Lab, not to replace Ozzy which would be an unfair burden on a new friend, but to earn their own place in your heart.

I commend you for taking Ozzy into your home at 2 yrs old and providing such a fulfilling life for him as one of your family members.

Perhaps you may even meet again.

Wow, so sorry LOM.  This brought a tear to my eye.  I am a huge dog lover and adopted a 2 year old Lab myself about 5 years ago.  I have 2 dogs now and have been very attached to all of my previous dogs.  Spoiled? Yes.  Part of the family....definitely.

i am at a loss of words to express my condolences as words do not do your sadness justice. All I can say is take your time with the grief and when you are ready then think about how to proceed if you want another sweet buddy. Hang in there Little-old-man!
