when you have windows 7 you need to fill in an email adres ( dont forget this step )

If you already have windows 8 it will use the email adres of the account that you use to logon in windows 8.

Logged on this morning and got this message from Microsoft saying i could reserve a free "full" upgrade for Windows 10 when it is released, anyone else get this, it's not usually like them to give stuff away for free?

I'm glad you posted this SOB, not that I thought I was the only one "chosen" lol but wasn't sure what to think either... you're right , microsoft and free aren't usually used together.

I would not recommend upgrading to 10. If you cant do a full install I would hold off. I had two boxes not upgrade properly on a pre release.

Over all I love Windows 10.. just only when a clean install.

Let me re-phrase my question....

I have 32 gig of memory...will Windows 10 see all 32 gigs? or will it only see 16gig like Window 7 home?

Thanks,

aj

Where are you getting that info from?  Everything I have read from Microsoft has stated that if you have an existing qualifying version of Windows then you can have a free upgrade, however you have to perform that upgrade within a year of the Windows 10 release.

To cite my information: http://www.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/windows-10-faq

*Windows Offer Details

Yes, free! This upgrade offer is for a full version of Windows 10, not a trial. 3GB download required; standard data rates apply. To take advantage of this free offer, you must upgrade to Windows 10 within one year of availability. Once you upgrade, you have Windows 10 for free on that device.

Our lawyers made us say this:

Windows 10 Upgrade Offer is valid for qualified Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 devices, including devices you already own. Some hardware/software requirements apply and feature availability may vary by device and market. The availability of Windows 10 upgrade for Windows Phone 8.1 devices may vary by OEM, mobile operator or carrier. Devices must be connected to the internet and have Windows Update enabled. Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 Update required. Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 enterprise offerings outside of this offer. To check for compatibility and other important installation information, visit your device manufacturer’s website and the Windows 10 Specifications page. Additional requirements may apply over time for updates. Security and features are kept automatically up-to-date which is always enabled.

hmmm.... I guess I misread it earlier. I'm still a bit skeptical of the OS it'self anyway. Personally I won't be doing this "free" upgrade. Nothing "free" ever comes out of a big company without some strings attached.

All the games I play these days will run on linux and steamOS anyway (including insurgency). I'm going to be learning Blender as a video editor next to replace Premier and them I'm WINDOWS FREE!!! WOOHOO! I already prefer to do all my dev work on linux.

Oh of course they have motives for this, they are currently supporting multiple major OS versions and they need to try and consolidate more users to a single version. Windows 10 has an architecture where 'versions' are less used and platform independent applications are to be created. They are working hard on the store and cross platform integration into existing platforms such as the Xbox and mobile platforms as well as integration plans into entertainment hardware such as smart TVs.

All of this to get your money through applications that you will buy in the 'Store', a new advertising framework that will allow application developers and Microsoft themselves to serve adverts straight to your computer and a snooping system that will allow them to know your deepest desires in anal play for those adverts.

Those are the strings I have seen so far with the upgrade. They are again forcing Bing on the users and trying to create more of 'cloud' system by having OneDrive installed as default. Also not sure why you would want to send a web request 'every time' you search for an application or file on your computer but that's the case.

I downloaded and installed earlier today and have to say performance wise is so much better than Windows 7 and on par /slightly better than Windows 8. I do love the new start menu and I think they have got the balance right on functionality/efficiency with a modern look.

Not sure why the maps application comes as default.. I will always use Google Maps out of habit but their map software does look quite cool. I have downloaded the frameworks from MSDN to take a look in detail.

so if i upgrade to windows 10 i dont have to pay for anything all? right>?

Apart from what I have said above that is the case.

Yep it will be but that seems to be their plan, rather than having new major versions they will release updates to the codebase. I guess kind of what linux does.

We will see where they go with it but it does give them terrific power to change everyone's operating systems and begin to become skynet - especially as the updates for Windows 10 seem very aggressive and hard for a user to manipulate/control.

Hmmmmm soooo it's like most of EA/DICE's games.Patch it till it breaks then sell you a "New Improved version" of the Same exact game with only 4 maps BUT you can UPGRADE any time you want to get 4 MORE maps.

Yeah. I will not touch Win10 with a "10" foot pole for quite a while. Its not worth the trouble I know there will be. The problem with a being a beta tester when you are just a consumer,NOT A OS BUFF, is that most issues will be frustrating and you will need support from someone with more experience. Why do that to yourself? Wait it out!!
